About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Whole Lot Of Reversing Going On. Zwift France R G V

Texbiker.net Posted on February 16, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 16, 2024

Sometimes I rely on the weather forecast too much to determine whether I ride outside or not. Today I chose to ride Zwift after light rain fell until around 10 AM. The forecast predicted intermittent rain for most of the day but since 10 AM no more rain here. Well, I rode in France on the France R.G.V. route going 15.7 miles. The last time on this course was January 28th when I rode 16.07 miles. On Zwift I recorded four 90 day new PR’s: Marina Sprint Reverse, Pave Sprint Reverse, Aqueduc KOM Reverse, and Ballon Sprint Reverse. Looks like I rode backwards with all of those “reverses”. Strava has a longer memory showing only one PR: 3rd fastest time on Les Intestins – Inbound (6:51).

Overcast Sky Bike Ride. Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive

Texbiker.net Posted on February 15, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 15, 2024

An overcast day with less wind for today’s bike ride to the south and east following the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. Rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike for 36.11 miles. I saw another cyclist on Atascocita Shores Drive on the way back to Kingwood. I wore a new pair of Pearl Izumi Elite Gel gloves, retiring my gray gloves. The construction barriers east of Atascocita shores Drive on east FM1960 were being removed as I rode through. This will open up the shoulder some when the debris is cleaned up. Weather: Start 68 degrees, humidity 74$, dew point 59.4, overcast, wind S 6 mph; Finish 73 degrees, humidity 67%, dew point 61.4, overcast, wind S 4 mph. Need 120 miles to reach my February goal of 445 road miles. The video audio is much better today, some stereo sounds.

2 major Fort Worth transportation initiatives begin in February

By Mark Fadden | communityimpact.com

Beginning in February, Fort Worth officials will start work on two different initiatives—the Vision Zero action plan and “Moving a Million”—poised to shape the city’s fundamental policies regarding transportation infrastructure and traffic safety.

The backstory

According to the Vision Zero website, 42,000 people are killed in transportation-related accidents on U.S. roadways every year. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy and equitable mobility, the website states.

The website states the program was first implemented in Sweden in the 1990s. Initially spreading across Europe, it is now gaining traction in American cities. …

… The city’s “Moving a Million” initiative is a comprehensive long-range document, which the news release states will be used by transportation planners to build a safe and effective multimodal network for the following types of transit:

Walking
Bikes
Automobiles
Micromobility
Freight and mass transit

Both initiatives are slated to be completed by fall or winter 2025, according to the news release.

Showing the love: Boyd PD gives out bike to help student make it to schoolFree Access

By Austin Jackson | www.wcmessenger.com

Candy, flowers and cards are typical gifts exchanged on Valentine’s Day. The Boyd Police Department went in a different direction when it came to a local student who was struggling to get to school.

Officer Jason Gross with the Boyd Police Department made a deal with a local Boyd ISD student who kept missing school this school year. The department held up their end of the bargain, surprising the student with a new bike.

In a social media post shared Wednesday, Boyd PD said that Gross met the student earlier this school year after his mother asked the officer to talk to him about his absences. The student had missed an alarming amount of school.

While discussing the issue, the student said he didn’t have the energy to walk several blocks to school. So Gross had an idea.

The officer asked if the student had a bike, which would allow him to get to school quicker and with less effort. …

Day 33:Shepherd to Silsbee: Underestimated our mileage and played dodge the dog ALL DAY LONG

Tuesday February 13, 2024, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,070 miles (1,722 km) First off, we use a lot of things to plan. ACA routes, Google, paper maps, other people’s journals. Today we thought what the heck, let’s use ACA and the journals we’ve read.

So we pulled out the map, thought we’d ride up to Goodrich from Shepherd and join there. Day should be 65 miles and flat according to the journals. No problem.

Well the first problem, we left after 10. We felt very relaxed at Shepherds Sanctuary so we lingered and then we talked to the owner Peach for a while. That’s were we found out the journals might be wrong.

She said the ACA route used to come to the sanctuary but not now. We were using the newest map that was just updated. So our day was going to longer.

75 miles is a lot especially when traveling in the winter and …

Day 34:Silsbee to Dequincy: Off route, free catfish, and we are living life on the bayou

Wednesday February 14, 2024, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,125 miles (1,811 km) We poured over maps this morning. Where are we going next? We want to end up in Lafayette so we know we will go off route again but when should we deviate?

Today we deviated to head towards Dequincy, LA instead of Merryville, LA. Why because then we can check out Lake Charles too. So true to rambling, we went our own way. And hey, it worked out just great.

Every town was a ville today. Mauriceville, Deweyville, Swampville ( that’s not really a town ?)

We rode through a repaving project and traveled two lane …
