About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No GoPro GPS Stickers For Me. Cooler Than Preferred Ride Around Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on November 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 24, 2023

After four days of virtual riding I moved outdoors today. The weather wasn’t as warm as I prefer so bundled up wearing shorts, legwarmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and windbreaker jacket. I braved the chill and worn half finger gloves though I brought full finger gloved to my breakfast table. The reason I pushed the outdoor ride was to ride and record the GPS data on my GoPro Hero10 camera. A couple of days ago I learned that the GoPro Quik app can add stickers to video using the GPS data recorded by the GoPro and I wanted to try that. I chose a route that wasn’t too long around Kingwood and almost to Porter. I don’t have a route name that describes the route so I’ll stick with Kingwood Streets. I rolled out at 12:32 PM riding my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. One observation about the tubes on the Canyon, the TPU tube in the rear tire loses more air in a week than the rubber tube in the front tire. I checked the pressure before the ride, TPU tube 57 psi, and the rubber tube 68 psi. I run 80 psi and aired the tires up before leaving.

Finishing the ride at 1:52 PM I was ready to download the video from the GoPro to my Pixel 8 Pro phone and add the stickers. The download took awhile. I opened the GoPro Quik app, selected the first video to edit and when I went to apply a sticker for speed it said no GPS data. The GPS was turned on in the GoPro so I didn’t understand. Searching the internet I learned that Quick Capture, which I sue to shoot the video, does not lock in a GPS satellite and thus no GPS data. To get GPS data in the video I need to turn the GOPro on, wait for the GPS icon to go from gray to white and then record. If I stop recording and want to restart the GPS data I have to go through the same steps. This is not practical while riding. So, I will not record GPS data or add the stickers to the video. The stickers add speed, a map, elevation chart, and one other image that I don’t remember. A program exists that will merge my Bolt computer FIT data with the video but it costs $149 which is more than I am willing to pay.

Strava top result: 2nd fastest time on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:20). I saw another cyclist near the end of the ride.

Weather: Start 63 degrees, humidity 54%, dew point 46.6, mostly cloudy, wind NE 9 mph: Finish 65 degrees, humidity 48%, dew point 45.2, mostly clear, wind NE 8 mph.

Sweet Trails and Stunning Views at my Favorite State Park // Garner State Park Mountain Biking

Chenzo’s World | www.youtube.com

Today I’m exploring the MTB trails s at one of the most popular state parks in Texas. Garner state park is known for its gorgeous rolling hills, excellent hiking trails, awesome campsites and stunning views along the Frio river. Like most people, when I think of Garner, I usually think of camping, fishing and hiking adventures. But, if you’re a mountain bike lover like myself, you’ll be happy to know that garner state park also offers miles of single track and double track along its rolling hills and scenic creek beds. I had an absolute blast riding the rocky technical terrain out here and I hope this video gives you some insight when planning your next Texas mountain biking adventure. …

Protected bike lanes are coming downtown — but you’ll likely have to wait until 2026 to use them

By Molly Smith | www.expressnews.com

Downtown San Antonio will eventually see more protected bike lanes, thanks to federal funding.

The city received $15.8 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to build a “cycle track” on Market and Commerce streets. A “cycle track” is a bike lane that is physically separated from traffic, parking lanes and sidewalks so it can only be traveled by cyclists.

The two-way bike lane will cover one mile of downtown, the city announced in a news …

A Rebel On Thanksgiving Day, Zwift Watopia Rebel Route Big Flat 8

Texbiker.net Posted on November 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 23, 2023

Back riding Zwift on Thanksgiving Day. I went to ZwiftInsider.com looking for another rebel route and got information about the Watopia Big Flat 8. I didn’t remember riding it before but after the ride I checked SportTracks and found out I rode it once before on February 14th this year using the RoadCaptain Runner software extension for Zwift. The two rides are very close in stats with today being slightly slower and shorter distance.

Outside it was in the mid 50’s, cloudy, and rain moving around the area. Good conditions to ride Zwift.

The route information from ZwiftInsider.com: “This route is essentially a mashup between Watopia’s Tick Tock and Volcano Flat routes.” The link gives the turn by turn instructions which I managed to follow correctly today. I finished at the right place near the Desert flats starting area. I wasn’t alone on the route or in Watopia as you can see on the screenshots of the turns I made.

Texas’s Newest Mountain Bike Park Was Built by a Fearless Teen Entrepreneur

By Aaron Chamberlain | www.texasmonthly.com

At Station Mountain Bike Park, Rhett Jones created the serpentine trails and daring jumps of his dreams.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago, my fourteen-year-old son and I pulled into the newest mountain bike park in Central Texas—Station Mountain, in the hilly lakeside hamlet of Marble Falls—with slight trepidation on my part. Though I spend a lot of time on my bike and once traversed the 3,014-mile perimeter of Texas, I prefer to stick to roads of asphalt or gravel. Luckily we weren’t there to put on a demonstration, just to preview the park and chat with its teenage owner and creator, Rhett Jones.

After speaking with Jones, we climbed to the top of the park on our bikes via the shuttle road that bisects the 129-acre property. Actually, my son ditched me halfway up to check out the jump lines near the bottom. After snapping a …

Top 10 must-do US gravel races in 2024

Location: Hico, Texas

Distances: 150 miles (6,700 feet), 100 miles, 60 miles, 30 miles

Website: Gravel Locos

Registration: $185, spots available

Gravel Locos, on the other hand, is the gravel race in the US that might have the biggest emphasis on the professional side of things. It is, unapologetically, the pre-Unbound test for many riders. In turn, Gravel Locos reflects the race in a number of ways.

First off, its long course is a full 150 miles and, like Kansas, those miles are often done in hot, humid conditions. Secondly, it doesn’t have long climbs, only small, but repetitive punches that each rider must weather. Third, and especially for the elites, the field has all the same favourites that will travel to …
