About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Could’ve Picked An Easier Day To Bike Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2023

I could’ve picked an easier day to ride my Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood route. The Space City Weather forecast email mentioned the wind would be around 20 mph today. Not long after I started the bike ride at 10:01 AM I could tell the wind was stronger than the 9 mph the screenshot showed. The bushes and trees were moving around as I rode through Kingwood which usually doesn’t have the higher wind due to those trees. My Cervelo Caledonia has 50mm carbon wheels which catch the wind easily too. I battled the headwind when I was out in the open from Atascocita Shores Drive all the way to Stroker Road. I took a short break at the Ramsey Road bridge at Old Atascocita Road and checked the weather on my phone: SE 20 mph gusts 29 mph. Riding south on Ramsey Road was an ordeal. I dropped to the 35×15 gears and my speed was 8 to 11 mph into the wind. The big relief came when I turned right onto Stroker Road with a cross tailwind all the way to FM 2100. Biking north on FM 2100 the tailwind allowed me to ride at 20 mph with minimal pedaling. Going west over Lake Houston the wind pushed me around some until I reached the west shore. From there to the 1:52 PM finish the wind was at my back. My legs got a workout today. I’m including the cadence chart for fun. Weather overall: Start 82 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 72.5, partly cloudy, wind Se 9 mph; Finish 85 degrees, humidity 64%, dew point 71.1, mostly cloudy, wind SE 17 mph gusts 32 mph.

Today’s 45.13 miles is about average for the five previous rides on the route in 2023. This gets me to within 24 miles of reaching my 700 mile goal for October. I need 167 miles to reach my 7,900 mile goal for the year.

Dallas leaders unveil Trinity Forest Spine Trail section, plan for next phase

By Cecilia Lenzen | communityimpact.com

After officially unveiling the first section of a new trail through east Dallas, city leaders are planning to begin constructing its next phases in 2024.

What happened

Members of City Council, the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, and The Loop Dallas held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 21 to celebrate the opening of part of the Trinity Forest Spine Trail.

The new trail, which is being constructed in two phases—a 4-mile north phase and a 3.5-mile south phase—will connect the Santa Fe Trail at White Rock Lake to the Trinity Forest trail system once completed.

Two miles of the north phase opened for use in the spring, but city leaders waited until fall …

Round the Block: The last leg

Day 30 – Vanderpool to Kerrville, TX: A nice day on rolling hills

Sunday October 22, 2023, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 1,635 miles (2,631 km) We woke up to a dark cloudy morning that was heavy with humidity. It looked like it could start raining any minute. In fact, it started sprinkling lightly when we were eating breakfast but then stopped and that was it for the day. I do have to say that we have been blessed with great weather so far. It is forecasted to rain as we get closer to Austin in the next couple days. Still hoping it passes us by.

Today was a great day of riding. We did start out with what had been called “Heart attack hill”. Some were saying that the grade was 20% on that hill. All I know is I had the bike in granny gear and just moving at 3.5 mph up that hill. It was humid and the sweat was just dripping off my face and arms. I also had an issue with my glasses fogging up. I guess it was caused by my body heat. It was a good thing that it was done early in the ride. It was cool and …

Day 31 – Vanderpool to Johnson City, TX: Up and down

Monday October 23, 2023, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,709 miles (2,750 km) During the night, I could hear it was raining off and on. In the tent it always sounds worse than it is. We did wake to clouds and spitting rain. Took off with the rain jacket on, but it didn’t take long before I had to take it off. It was just too warm and humid. You will either get wet with the rain or wet from sweating and if it’s not too cold, I prefer getting wet with the rain.

It was a beautiful day of riding. There were just enough interesting things to make it good. We started off riding this road through cattle country. It was just an open range with the cattle there on the side of the road. They must be used to bikes coming through because they didn’t even move as we rode by. Usually, cattle are pretty spooked by bicycles. Then it was through ranch after ranch. It was hilly today. Still in “Texas Hill Country”. Much of the day, if you were not …

Bike Around the Bay raises funds to protect Galveston Bay

By Cheryl Donatto | baytownsun.com

More than 1,200 cyclists took to the roads over the weekend to participate in their choice of two fundraising rides for the Galveston Bay Foundation, a conservation nonprofit that works to protect and preserve Galveston Bay.

The 17th annual Bike Around the Bay was held on Oct. 21 and 22. The 175-mile endurance ride attracted 915 riders who pedaled 97 miles on day one and 78 miles on day two. A one-day ride option was also available.

On the first day, riders followed a scenic route through historic Wallisville, over Turtle Bayou, through coastal prairies to the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and over the Intercoastal Waterway at …

Too Much Tech. Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2023

The last full week of October rolled around and I did too. I went over several routes in my head for a place to ride and settled on the Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route. I don’t normally ride this route at the beginning of the week but why not. In the video I say I’m riding my Cervelo Caledonia but that’s wrong. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike starting at 10:47 AM. I need to move up my start times about an hour. Today I was distracted setting up my Motorola Razr+ 2023 phone so it would push email notifications to my Wahoo Bolt 2 computer. It wasn’t working until I changed my email app to Gmail and they starting working. Yea!!

Weather for today’s bike ride was great. Lots of sun, the wind was light from the southeast but later picked up to 14 mph making the ride back from Cumberland hard on my legs. I worked hard to keep my overall average speed at 13.6 mph into the headwind. The previous 7 bike rides on this route averaged about 34.5 miles and today I rode 35.83 miles. I think the increase was at the start and riding through Brooklyn Trails. I used the 35×13 gears the most according to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I finished at 1:46 PM. Weather: Start 82 degrees, humidity 76%, dew point 74.1, mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph; Finish 86 degrees, humidity, 61%, dew point 70.6, mostly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph.

Strava top result 3rd fastest time on North by Northpark (1:53). The tailwind helped some.

Closing Out The Week Biking Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2023

Sunday’s bike ride was on Kingwood streets and a few greenbelt trails. Riding my Lynksey Helix the adventure began at 2:07 PM after I got home from church. Yesterday I far enough to push the week over 200 miles and today’s 21.35 miles closed it at 233.95 miles including one Zwift ride on Monday. The weather was accommodating with mid 80’s, mostly cloudy, and wind at 3 mph to 13 mph when I finished at 3:53 PM. I need 104 road miles to reach my October goal of 700 miles. Including Zwift miles my month total is 643.49. I passed several people out on their bikes and other walking and jogging. I changed some of the streets and added a couple of sections of greenbelt trails compared to my last time biking Kingwood streets.
