About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Earliest Start This Week. Cyclists Along Atascocita – Huffman – Walden Route

Texbiker.net Posted on October 28, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 28, 2023

Today’s bike ride started at 8:49 AM, the earliest start this week and maybe the week before. The 7:32 AM sunrise meant the sky was cloudy and the humidity a hefty 98%. I expected the clouds to lift and the humidity go down as I headed to Huffman riding my Canyon Endurace bike on a slightly different Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route. I left out a couple of streets in the beginning so I could get to where I usually see other cyclists on Saturday. That worked as other cyclists passed my ride in Kingwood, Kings River, crossing Lake Houston, and Old Atascocita road. At the start of the ride I needed 22 miles to make a 200+ mile week. This route averages 34 miles and today I rode 32.51 miles pushing the week’s total to 210.98 and October to 854.47 road + Zwift miles. I rode swiftly today like I didn’t ride 45 miles yesterday. My legs had the power and my average speed hit 14.5 mph before settling back to 14.4 mph. The drive to get where other cyclists ride motivated faster pedaling, I think. I was back home at 11:12 AM, earlier than some of my recent bike rides started.

Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023

#1: Day 33: 10/26/23 Austin to Buescher SP,TX By sedona_rocks on Thu 26 Oct 2023 18:20 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) What a wet, wet day. It started raining at 7 am and didn’t stop until after we finished at 4 pm. It was probably the wettest day I ever rode in, at least I can’t recall a wetter day on a bike. I started out from the hotel during a break in the rain and got about 3 blocks before it started pouring. I ducked into a coffee shop and waited it out. The next 12 miles it only drizzled as we left Austin city proper. Then another …

Turns out all the wet weather yesterday shorted out my Di2 electronic shifting on my bike. It was stuck in one gear and wasn’t moving. I knew it was serious from my first pedal stroke this morning. It was such a sinking feeling because I knew I couldn’t fix it. Luckily the tour leader was …

Round the Block: The last leg

Day 35 – Buecher State Park to Somerville, TX

Friday October 27, 2023, 73 miles (117 km) – Total so far: 1,886 miles (3,035 km) It was a good thing we had the pavilion last night. It really rained a couple times and was nice this morning that we didn’t have to deal with a wet tent. However, it was humid and warm last night. I pretty much just slept on my air mat and was still too warm. I needed to help get things ready for breakfast and lunch which puts you a little late for getting on the road, but we had many people helping so we didn’t get too late a start.

We had a great day of riding today. It was slightly foggy when we started and very heavy humidity. I am amazed at how quickly Texas became green. It appears that this part of Texas gets more rain. We rode through many cattle ranches and pastures today.

I put on a few extra miles than I needed to. I decided I would follow the …

North to Splendora To Make Up For Yesterday’s Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 27, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 27, 2023

After getting soaked biking south yesterday I figured going north might be drier. It was. I picked a route I’ve ridden once before this year, Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood. The other ride was May 8th on the Lynskey Helix for 44.04 miles. Today I rode the Cervelo Caledonia for 45.15 miles. I selected this route for the extra distance to make up for the shorter ride yesterday due to the rain. Thanks to those miles my week is up to 178.47 miles, within reach of 200 with tomorrow’s bike ride. YTD 2023 closed to within 37 miles of last year with 8,554 miles.

Cervelo Caledonia bike
Me riding in Kingwood

Road construction at SH 242 going north meant riding on one lane for several hundred yards. On the way back I took an unopened road where the construction barriers begin passing the Big Rivers Water Park, crossing SH 242 onto Speed Street back to the south bound frontage road. I rode through Tavola West skirting around the construction barriers on the frontage road.

Riding to Splendora the ESE wind assisted my pedaling. I expected some headwind on the way back but it was not too much. I built my overall average speed to 14.1 mph. Started at 10:44 AM and finished at 2:12 PM.

The sky was cloudy but no rain though the humidity and dew point were high enough to keep me moist. When I stopped for traffic lights I felt the sweat running down the inside of my jersey. Overall weather: Start 76 degrees, humidity 99%, dew point 75.8, cloudy, wind ESE 7 mph; Finish 84 degrees, humidity, 72%, dew point 73.8, mostly cloudy, wind ESE 9 mph.

No problem with the Rode Wireless mic slipping off of the GoPro media mod mount. I put a piece of foil from a tire patch in the cold shoe slot and the extra friction kept it in place. I need to remember inserting the foil for each ride.

Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023

#1: Day 31: 10/24/23 Johnson City to Austin, TX (thread) By sedona_rocks on Tue 24 Oct 2023 15:01 (US/Pacific) Reply (1) Rating: (0) The wind was pretty stiff last night-it bent the sides and top of the tent into my face several times as I was lying on my cot. But everything held up and the rain held off until after we woke up. We saw a little bit of everything today on the ride into Austin – rain, sun, headwinds, crosswinds, hills and traffic. The same wind that we experienced last night was in our face much of the ride today. Several of us ducked into a coffee shop for coffee and croissants during one downpour. Today we biked up two of the steepest hills we’ve seen yet. The ride finished with some urban riding through the suburbs to the central city to our hotel which is very close to the state capitol building. Because we couldn’t check in till 3, several of us stopped at a saloon with outdoor seating and waited out another downpour. The Motel8 is not bad, all things considered. We’ll cook out this evening and have a day off tomorrow.

by: Matt McGovern | www.conchovalleyhomepage.com

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 44) – The Texas Transportation Commission has approved more than $345 million for projects across the state.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the money will go towards new sidewalks, bikeways and other types of infrastructure to help improve safety and enhance quality of life in Texas communities. There are 83 projects in development involving schools, jobs, public transit and local destinations.

Some of the projects approved include sidewalks connecting to schools and transit options, shared-use paths benefiting both pedestrians and cyclists, new pedestrian bridges and 15 planning studies. All projects were selected after a competitive call for projects from cities and counties across the state.

Day 34 – Austin to Buecher State Park: Rain and more rain ??

Thursday October 26, 2023, 53 miles (85 km) – Total so far: 1,813 miles (2,918 km) Going to bed last night we knew we were going to have a huge probability for rain and Mother Nature did not let us down. It was raining when we woke and went to breakfast in the motel and we pretty much had rain all day. We waited for a break in the weather but it didn’t take long to start showering on us after we left.

Getting out of Austin was a good ride. I do like going through the urban streets looking at houses and businesses. For much of it there was a bike path. It ended up putting us on this road that was pretty busy and that is when it just started pouring. Lighting and thunder started and it just got too dangerous to be in the road. There was this construction business that we ran into and we went in and just waited out the storm on the leeward side of the building. We we’re probably there a half hour. As soon as things let up we were off again.

We came to the City of Bastrop and the …
