About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Barn, Bayou City Adventures named exclusive providers for Buffalo Bayou Partnership

www.yourhoustonnews.com/west_university

Buffalo Bayou Partnership announced a five-year exclusive partnership with Bike Barn – a Houston-based bike retailer servicing the biking community since 1983 – and Bayou City Adventures – a popular provider of outdoor recreational equipment and services – to begin offering bicycles, canoes, and kayaks for rent along Buffalo Bayou between Shepherd Drive and Fannin Street. Rental stations will be located along major points of interest along Buffalo Bayou Park, namely Lost Lake and The Water Works, and also at the foot of Sunset Coffee Building at Allen’s Landing in downtown.
This agreement comes as the improvements to the 160-acre, 2.3-mile Buffalo Bayou Park are nearing …

Give bikers a break, and more lanes

www.paisano-online.com

As the price of parking permits rise and temperatures begin to fall, more UTSA students choose bicycles as their muscle-powered method of transportation.
Cycling to class is a great way to save money, energy and time that would otherwise be spent hunting down a parking spot. Students who bike to class burn calories while reducing their carbon footprint — a choice beneficial to cardiovascular health and the environment.
However, the benefits of biking do not come without …

First Tour – Dallas to Austin/San Marcos/Gruene

by Jarrett2        www.bikeforums.net

Howdy all. I’m planning my first self-supported tour coming up in a month.
I’ve got the bike, got the bags, got the legs, got a ride buddy, but looking for route suggestions.
I’m wondering if anyone has ridden from the Dallas area down to the Austin/San Marcos/Gruene area before?
I’m actually starting about 40 miles south of Dallas, so the total trip seems to be between 185-215 miles depending on stopping point. This will be a one way trip as I have a ride back. …

Day 21: Sanderson to Seminole Canyon State Park (10 m. W of Comstock): Hot west Texas.

By Judy Gamble        www.crazyguyonabike.com

No Tears on the Southern Tier

Wednesday September 30, 2015, 81 miles (130 km) – Total so far: 1,281 miles (2,062 km)
81 miles, 2,078′ climbing
Since we had just experienced a few days where the wind came up within the first 20 miles of riding, we decided that today was gonna be an earlier start. After a cup of coffee in our room and a quick bowl of cereal we were on the road in the dark at 6:30am. Sunrise was around 7:35a or so. Temperatures were cool enough that we both started out with jackets on. They came off within the first 10 miles as we started to heat up and the sun came up.
Traffic was moderate, with primarily semis travelling in both directions. We have both LED headlights on the front and rear so we were very visible. All the drivers …

New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico!

Monday September 28, 2015, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 127 miles (204 km)
This is a beautiful ride. Most of the world, who imagine that Texas is a flat world with longhorns and oil wells have no imagination that includes a Texas like I saw today.
The first few miles was slowly rising farmland. The weather was perfect, cool and calm. I saw a coyote just inside the fence line. I made eye contact, and …

Charity event nearly turns deadly for cyclist

Author: Robert Arnold        www.click2houston.com

Video

HOUSTON – An annual charity event nearly turned deadly for a Houston area cyclist. On Saturday, Matt Haynie was one of hundreds of cyclists participating in the American Diabetes Association’s annual Tour de Cure 100-mile bike ride.
The event helps bring awareness to diabetes and raises money for research.
Haynie said he was 64 miles into his ride when he was hit by a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck on FM 529 just outside of Bellville. Haynie suffered numerous deep tissue injuries and …

Mellow Johnny’s opening Fort Worth location this weekend

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

FORT WORTH, Texas (BRAIN) — Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop is planning a grand opening Saturday for its new Fort Worth location, which is being operated as the bicycle component of The Trailhead Cycling and Fitness Center.
Mellow Johnny’s was founded in 2008 in Austin, highlighting co-owner Lance Armstrong’s longtime sponsor, Trek Bicycle. The new location, however, is a Specialized Elite dealer, offering bicycle sales, service, rentals, training, rides and clinics.
“It was really the only opportunity we had in that region. There was a competitor nearby with Trek already, so …

I received an email today from Cullen

I know this is a long shot, but I thought there might be an interesting angle for your website.
I’m an mtb rider and trail builder from Austin.
I visited Ireland recently and had an excellent time renting a bike from one of Ireland’s only high-end mtb rental companies– biking.ie.
I chatted with Leo at that shop, south of Dublin in the Wicklow mountains.
Anyway, he tells me that one of their employees and racers just moved to Austin. His name is Richie.
Unfortunately, in his first week in Austin, his bike got stolen.  Here are some more details:
http://www.bikemojo.com/speak/14-austin-voodoo/98749-stolen-bike-w-6th-street.html
He made a police report, has been checking craigslist, all that….
But, I was hoping, that because his bike is so rare in Texas (they are only distributed in the UK & Ireland), that maybe your sharper readers might spot it in Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio, etc.

Stolen bike W. 6th street
by Richie Enduro
Hey guys!
Just moved here from from Ireland last week, I brought my Vitus sentier 275 over with me( Irish brand) looking to enjoy the local trails. After my first exploring spin on saterday night I locked my bike up beside my apartment – which is right in front of my window and right beside the front door.
When I went to go for a ride yesterday morning it was gone. Thieves had cut through the lock with what must have been an industrial enough bit of kit.
It’s a 27.5 large red and black hard tail. Maxxis high roller II front- Mavic 2.4 on the back. It’s got 740mm bars and a small enough Suntour fork-120mm.
Ive been watching Craigslist. I reported it. And I was recommended to post here by a helpful Austin rider. But if you guys could keep an eye out for my Bike that would be great, ,already missing it.
Any tips?

Day 20: Marathon to Sanderson: Mostly downhill

By Judy Gamble        www.crazyguyonabike.com

No Tears on the Southern Tier

Tuesday September 29, 2015, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,200 miles (1,931 km)
56 Miles, 542′ Climbing
Restful. Last nights sleep was restful at the funky, hippie, hostel. After a rather upscale meal at the Gage Motel we both hit our perspetive beds in our silk sleeping bag liners that we have for camping. It was dark, quiet and 9 hours later it was daylight. And we were ready for a rather easy day.
We started out with a bit of a climb out of Marathon, but for the most part, the ride was on a downhill slant. Unfortunately the wind turned on after about 12 miles and we had it gusting to 20 in our faces all the way to …

New Report: Equity of Access to Bicycle Infrastructure

www.bikeleague.org

Equity Research/Policy        by League Staff
UPDATE: This report’s case study was revised with updated information on Sept. 16, 2015. The case study on Chicago now reflects the most up-to-date data related to bicycle infrastructure plans in the city, made possible through the provision of data from the Chicago Department of Transportation. The League again reiterates the value of this report as a tool for other communities to use — the case study is merely that formula in action and not meant to serve as a statement on or indictment of Chicago or any other community. Balmorhea: From the Oil Field to Farmland

By Steven Neish        www.crazyguyonabike.com

New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico!
Sunday September 27, 2015, 36 miles (58 km) – Total so far: 92 miles (148 km)
Today the bike was fully loaded. With water, it weighed a little over 90 pounds. It rode heavy. It wasn’t too bad, but every time I stopped, I could tell that the bike was different. I wouldn’t want it to be heavier.
Today, I rode from Pecos to Balmorhea. It was a good ride. Gentle uphills but no major climbs. The roads were good. No important wind. Partly cloudy.
Halfway through the ride, the markings of being in the oilfield went away. The landscape became a world of agriculture. Irrigation, crops, cattle. Arid high plains. I suspect that west Texas will run out of water before it runs out of oil. I understand the science that might allow us to move away from oil. I don’t understand how to …

2015 UCI World Championship Road Races

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2015 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2015

At the end of May my wife and I decided to go to Richmond, VA for the world championship bike races. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity since the last time the races were in the United States was 29 years ago. We combined the drive to Richmond with a visit to my youngest daughter and our grandsons in Ohio.

We arrived in Richmond on September 24th. After checking in to our hotel we drove downtown to look at the race area and find potential parking places. The road races began on the 25th with the time trails earlier in the week. It looked like there would be parking close to the start/finish line and we planned on being there.

Each day I was at the 50M sign from the finish line. The weather Friday (25th) included a chance of rain but it didn’t materialize. My wife watched the Friday races but decided to stay at the hotel on Saturday because the rain percentage was higher. I arrived at the 50M spot to watch the start of the Junior Women’s Road Race. The crowd was light at the start but by the finish it was much bigger. The excitement was great with two Team USA women coming in 1st and 2nd. At 12:45 the Under 23 Men’s road Race started and the crowd increased. This time Team USA did not finish at the top but still did great. Driving to the start line we got lost and drove by Libby Hill where the course went up hill on cobble stones. Somehow we got our bearings and made it the starting area.

While waiting on the racers to return to the start/finish each lap I talked to people around me. We met people from Weatherford, TX, Columbia, Florida, Atlanta, GA, Chapel Hill, NC. The people from Erteria were committed to cheering their riders and probably won the spirit award with their flags and cohesiveness.

Saturday was the Junior Men’s road race beginning at 9:00 AM. The sky held back on raining but there was drizzle from time to time. Again I was at the 50M sign or closer to the start finish line. The crowd was bigger than Friday. The Elite Women’s Road Race began at 1:00 with the drizzle still hanging around. The noise at the finish line ramped up each time the women passed through on their 8 laps. Across from where I was one of the VIP areas held people willing to pay the price of admission. Team USA Women tired hard but were not able to win with Team USA member Megan Guarnier taking the bronze medal.

Sunday the Elite Men’s road Race started at 9:00 but not at the start/finish used by the other races. I didn’t read the information correctly that they would start at the University of Richmond about 8 miles away. I wanted to get pictures of the pro’s but wasn’t able to with the mistake. The crowd was much bigger on Sunday. Again the weather forecast called for rain but it didn’t happen. I parked much closer and left the umbrellas in the Jeep but easily accessible. Every time the breakaway and peloton passed the crowd went crazy beating on the barriers and ringing the cowbells Shimano gave out. It was great. Watching Peter Sagan approach the finish line was super as the chasers tried to catch him but failed.

After the race was over we left to go back to the hotel. Once I got back I checked my phone and saw a message from USA Cycling that I had won a signed Team USA jersey from a picture I posted on Twitter. They asked me to come by the booth at the FanFest but since I was already gone I asked if they could send it to me. I am looking forward to getting it and mounting it for display.

I took many pictures with links below. The pictures are broken up by the date.
