About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 18: Ft. Davis Layover: A lovely little town

By Judy Gamble        www.crazyguyonabike.com

No Tears on the Southern Tier
Sunday September 27, 2015
Today is a layover day to rest our weary muscles.
It was our intention to get out on foot to have a look at town. We did that early in the AM and stopped for a AYCE Buffet for $9.95 at the Bistro. It was good and filling.
It wasn’t long before we were back on our bikes (oh, weary legs!) to travel the 1.5 miles to the Ft. Davis Historic site and a bit of grocery shopping for tonights meal.
Ft. Davis was built in the 1854 to protect to travelers on the main road linking El Paso and …

No medals, but plenty of mettle, for Team USA

By Andrew Hood        velonews.competitor.com

RICHMOND, Virginia (VN) — The six-man American squad lined up on home roads Sunday as outsiders and underdogs, but they put on a show for the hometown crowd worthy of a medal.
Much to the delight of U.S. fans watching the first UCI Road World Championship in the United States in nearly 30 years, three Americans went on the attack, first with Virginian Ben King, followed by late-race moves by Taylor Phinney and Tyler Farrar. Alex Howes (12th) and Brent Bookwalter (19th) punched into the top-20 to finish off an animated day in the saddle. …

… “We’re very excited to race here in front of the home fans,” said Texan Lawson Craddock. “We know we are not starting as favorites, but we want to make a good race for the fans.” …

Síclovía rolls through downtown S.A.

By John MacCormack        www.mysanantonio.com

Amos Lozano works on his balancing skills along Broadway Street during the YMCA of Greater San Antonio Siclovia, Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015. The event is free to the public and a 3.25 miles stretch of Broadway from downtown to Lion’s Park is closed to traffics so that the people can walk, run, bike and enjoy the area. Also included in the event Dignowity Park on the near eastside.
A celebration of fitness, play and community, Síclovía kicked off its ninth edition Sunday morning at Alamo Plaza with rock music, cameo appearances by politicians and several hundred people on bikes, all anxious to get rolling.
“It’s my first one. My friends here have been doing it for years and they asked me to come along,” said Scott Proulx, 44, of …

Cycling and Driving Survey

Harold Stanislaw, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, California State University

Welcome to the California State University, Stanislaus Cycling and Driving Survey!
This survey is part of a scientific study being conducted by Dr. Harold Stanislaw and the students in his PSYC 3800 course at CSU Stanislaus. The survey asks about you and your attitudes and habits when you ride a bicycle or drive a car. You will also be asked about your accident history. You must be at least 18 years old to complete the survey.
Most people finish the survey in 15 minutes or less. Completing the survey does not guarantee you any benefits, but you may learn how research in psychology is conducted and how bicyclists and motorists act on the road. More information about the study will be provided at the end of the survey. …

New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico!

By Steven Neish        www.crazyguyonabike.com

First Day: New Mexico to Pecos-Through the Oil Field
Saturday September 26, 2015, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 56 miles (90 km)
My son flew down from Minneapolis to San Antonio on Thursday night. He was responsible for delivering me to West Texas. Last night, we drove from San Antonio to Pecos, TX after dinner. This morning, we woke up, had breakfast, and loaded the bike into the back of the car and drove for the New Mexico border.
He dropped me off on Highway 285 at the New Mexico border. Originally, when I was planning this ride, i thought that I would leave from Carlsbad, NM. There is a feature at Google Maps, where you actually can look at the road. Google has driven almost everywhere in America and mapped a ridiculous number of roads. Anyway, a few months ago, when I was planning, I used the Google Maps streetview feature and “rode” the route I was planning to ride. I wanted to make sure that there were shoulders along most of the route. Even if there isn’t much traffic, its not as much fun to ride in car lane. On my virtual ride, I realized that the shoulders in …

Tyler approved for regional bike trail

by FAITH HARPER        www.tylerpaper.com

Legacy Trails, the first planned regional hike and bike trail, is now a reality after grant funding was approved on Thursday.
The Texas Transportation Commission voted to award the city of Tyler more than $3.5 million in grant funds for the construction of a multi-use trail that eventually will extend from Grande Boulevard to Gresham, according to the city. The city will match $1.6 million for the project, which will come from half-cent sales tax monies.
The Tyler City Council approved a resolution in support of applying for a federal Transportation Alternative Program grant for the project in April.

In Car-Addicted Dallas, A New Bridge Is Actually Good For Bikers

www.fastcoexist.com

You might scoff, depending on where you live, but in a city ranked twice as the worst biking city in the country, a separated bike lane is a huge deal.
Drivers in Dallas spend around 45 hours a year stuck in gridlock. But despite painfully long commutes from the suburbs, few are tempted to try giving up their cars. That may slowly start to change: As part of a massive new transit project, a new bridge will finally make it easier to bike into the city.
The new Margaret McDermott Bridge will …

Dallas bike lanes moving forward, but not the way everyone wants

By BRANDON FORMBY, Transportation Writer        www.dallasnews.com

At first blush, the 26 miles of road between Mike McNair’s Garland home and Irving office is nothing out of the ordinary compared to the average North Texas commute. Except for the three days a week the graphic designer makes that trek by bicycle.
Depending on the day, McNair pedals across a variety of routes that run largely through Dallas. He relies on a mix of side streets, bike …

No Tears on the Southern Tier

Day 16: Ft. Hancock to Van Dorn: Vent, vento, viento, gwynt, wind…any way you spell it, it blows!
Friday September 25, 2015, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 996 miles (1,603 km)
74 miles, 1666′ climbing, WINDY!
This will be a short post since it was a fairly noneventful day. Yeah right. It will probably go on forever…..
We arose from a reasonably restful night at the church to a quick breakfast and departure around 7:00am. We are forever thankful that folks like the Ft. Hancock Community Church embrace the biking community to provide a place to stay. …

Strava: The Last Holdout for Lance Fans

by Johnny Guzman        bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

With Nowhere Else To Compete, Lance Posts His Rides To Strava
I used to be a Lance Armstrong fan before 2012. Cycling was a very low information sport back when Lance Armstrong was winning his Tour De France titles. Now fans know better than to support the actions of a serial cheater like Lance. At Least five books about the story of Lance’s doping have been written, many first hand accounts and many autobiographies that mentioned Lance along with the author’s own involvement in doping. It is well known that …
