About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2015 Texas 4000 Team Rolls Into Fort St. John, BC, Canada as Part of 4,000 Mile Cycling Trek Students on 70-Day Ride to Share Hope, Knowledge & Charity in Fight against Cancer
AUSTIN, TEXAS (July 10, 2015) — On the longest annual charity bicycle ride in the world, the Texas 4000 team will be rolling through Fort St. John on Saturday July 18, 2015, just 50 days after departing from Austin, Texas on their way to Anchorage, Alaska. While in Fort St. John, the 2015 Texas 4000 Team will celebrate and share hope, knowledge and charity with friends and family before continuing on their 70-day journey.
The 72 undergraduate and graduate students from The University of Texas at Austin will brave the rain, sleet, wind, snow, heat and pedal more than 4,000 miles in the fight against cancer. After 18-months of leadership development training, volunteering, fundraising, and cycling, riders are put to the test throughout their summer ride to Alaska. Along their journey, they will visit with cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, and communities to make educational presentations about cancer prevention and early detection. Upper valley residents complain bike club loitering is causing traffic problems

Crystal Price        www.kfoxtv.com

EL PASO, Texas — Motorists in El Paso’s Upper Valley raise concerns to state officials and local authorities about bicyclists congesting the intersection of Upper Valley Road and Artcraft Road.
Arianni Dubard lives near the intersection and claims that bicyclists often stop in groups on the road and block some of the driving lanes.
“It’s causing quite a bit of congestion in our area,” Dubard said. “In my eyes it’s kind of obstructing the road.”
Dubard said that increased traffic at the intersection is a result of construction on Borderland Road and Westside Drive. She said the cyclists only add to the congestion.
Dubard said she has been in three near-accidents in the last four months, because cyclists have been stopped in the streets.
“There are cars that will kind of change lanes suddenly to miss those …

Corinth couple has biked in every U.S. state, traveled more than 80,000 miles since ’05

By Caitlyn Jones        www.dentonrc.com

Don Metivier sits in his workshop at his home in Corinth, examining the moving parts of his road bike. A mechanical engineer for most of his life, his trained eyes stay fixed from behind his glasses on the task at hand. He twists the wrench one more time, gives the wheel a final spin and rises.
“Ready?” the 68-year-old asks his wife.
“Yep,” answers 67-year-old Donna as she fastens her helmet.
The pair wheel their bicycles into the July sun and head out for their weekly 30-mile ride. Even after cycling in all 50 states, Don and Donna still work to add …

Early Start and Lots of Bike Riders

Texbiker.net Posted on July 11, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 11, 2015

I stated biking early than any previous ride since I went on the Spindletop Spin in Beaumont on June 6th. I rolled out the driveway at 8:54 to get a head start on the heat of the day. Biking the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I added some extra streets to get the distance up from the usual 32 miles to 34.73 miles today. It was 82 degrees at the start which felt comfortable but the 92% humidity meant I was sweating in short order. Returning home at 11:56 it was up to 98 and the humidity dropped to 52%.

With the earlier start I came across 55 bikers starting at Pines Place Drive and Pine Echo Drive all the way to FM2100. This was the Bike Barn Atascocita Saturday morning ride group. One of these was a tandem which I had not seen in this group before. Later when I was stopped at the Huffman Chevron I saw another tandem going south on FM2100. I think this was a different tandem but I am not sure. The stoker was a woman on each one. All of these riders were going the opposite direction from me since they started much earlier.

The Huffman Chevron was a welcomed spot at 23.1 miles. The heart was up and perspiration was flowing heavily. I got some paper towels to soak up the sweat around my eyes and then more to use while I was eating my snack and drinking some cold sport drink. I was there about 30 minutes before heading to home for the last 12 miles.

Huffman weather during rest stop
Huffman weather during rest stop
7-11-2015 Huffman Weather 2

My average speed was below 15.0 mph for this ride. I did manage to get it up to 14.8 mph but by the time I got home it was 14.5 mph. Below is a comparison of the rides on this route this year to date.

7-11-2015 Route Comparison Summary YTD

Where I stand: 158.7 miles this week, 298.57 miles in June and 3515 miles year to date.
