Over the past couple of days, we’ve talked with advocates for cyclists and pedestrians about ongoing concerns over accidents and fatalities involving Houstonians walking or riding bikes around town, and a general feeling that Houston is still not a particularly easy place to get around on foot or on a bicycle. Jay Blazek Crossley, a policy analyst with Houston Tomorrow, and Regina Garcia, the chair of Bike Houston, shared their suggestions for changes they’d like to see put in place to improve safety.
On this edition of Houston Matters, we turn to the Houston Police Department and the City of Houston’s Department of Public Works and Engineering to learn about immediate efforts to make walking and biking safer, more accessible options for Houstonians. We welcome your questions and comments for Sergeant Ruben Peña, with the Houston Police Department’s Bicycle Administration and Training Unit, and …

I saw that which you see here on FOX News online, widely believed by very few to be the world’s most reliable news source.

What started as a drive home from a high school mountain bike competition ended in a confiscated trailer and possible criminal charges against the team’s coach.
Members of the Dallas High School Composite mountain bike team were returning from Comfort in April when the two coaches were pulled over by Alvarado police for having the wrong registration tags for the trailer.
The officer determined the vehicle identification number had been purposely scratched off, an indicator of stolen property. The trailer was impounded after the coaches unloaded thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment. At a hearing June 8, a judge …

Here’s now, as announced in my previous blog entry, one of the videos I took this evening on my first bicycle ride with the camcorder mounted on the handlebar. I admit, the quality is not the best, as I still have to learn a lot about bicycling and at the same time recording, but it’s a beginning and …

If Houston were the ocean, the city’s public works department would be the giant squid: It lives deep, where few people can see it; only occasionally does it wash ashore to scare people; and it’s capable of grasping anything it wants and dragging it down into a morass of darkness and slow, agonizing death.
The department, the city’s largest in terms of employees, has its tentacles in a lot of functions that largely go unnoticed. It operates in a methodical way that many find cumbersome and resistant to feedback. That sense of isolation has changed in recent months, but public works is still a big glob of rules and …
