I waffled back and forth on which route to take today. I wanted to ride at least 37 miles in order to reach my March goal when I ride the LBJ100 on Saturday. I decided to ride to the north on a route I haven’t done in awhile: Loop 494 north to FM1485 to SR242 to FM1314 and then back home. I knew this route would be over 40 miles and it ended up at 45.26 miles. I averaged 16.2 mph with several 5 mile intervals 17 mph to 19 mph averages. Biking to the southeast would have been around 38 miles. The wind for the first 10 miles was in my face and I struggled to ride above 15 mph at times. When I reached New Caney and turned left onto FM1485 westbound the wind moved to my right rear quarter and I was able to pickup my speed. (see intervals 3 & 4) By the time I got to SR242 the road angled a little further south and the wind moved to my back. Intervals 5 to 7 I biked on on SR242 and FM1314 back to Porter. On FM1314 I expected some wind resistance but it wasn’t that much I was able to keep a high pace.
Stopping at the Stripes station on FM1314 at Valley Ranch Parkway I sat in the nice warm sun. The temperature was 68 when I started the ride at 12:27. The wind was not too strong coming from the north at 13 mph. I did not wear leg warmers thinking the temperature would warm up and the sun would keep the chill off the legs. The temperature did warm up to 73 by the time I returned home at 3:59 but the wind increased to 16 mph from the NNE with 23 mph gusts. My choice of a short and long sleeve jerseys under a windbreaker jacket was the correct one. I was comfortable most of the time except when I went into the shade for an extend time. The wind had a chill to it. There is a cool front moving through tonight bringing a 60% chance of rain tomorrow and a high of 60. I don’t think I will be biking tomorrow which is the reason I wanted to bike 40 miles or more today. Thursday warms up to 74 but there is a 100% chance of rain. Friday is a travel day to Fredericksburg for the LBJ100 on Saturday.

Dallas may soon join other Texas cities in starting a bicycle sharing program, but the city’s initial proposed investment, some say, is hardly a confident endorsement of the idea.
Earlier this month, the Dallas Park and Recreation Board approved $125,000 for non-profit Friends of Fair Park to install and operate a bicycle rental program at Fair Park.
The $125,000, if approved by city council, would pay for a network of 15-20 bicycles.
Other cities, such as Fort Worth, have made larger initial investments in bike-sharing programs.
Last year, the City of Fort Worth spent more than a million dollars on installing the…

This past weekend I set out with Jan and Monte from FCS Cycling to Corsicana, Texas for The 2014 Arthrosurface Tour of Corsicana. This weekend I was going to race my legs out, see what needs to be worked on, and leave with a smile. I did just that, and then some. Stage 1 was at 9AM Saturday morning, an individual time trial for less than 5 miles, I have always hated TT’s so I figured I would just go and give it my best. The roads were ruff, really ruff, but that didn’t stop anyone, for 4.76 miles it was just you and the road, it was 1 direction…straight. It was great weather, the wind was a cross tail basically the whole way there with an uphill finish. I don’t like TT’s, at all, but when I like them they are longer, between 10 and 20 miles favor me the best, so I can get a good tempo going and just pound it out. The short, sprint ones don’t really work in my favor, no biggie though. I was able to knock the race out in 12 minutes and 12 seconds, I was really happy with that, till I saw my result, 6th place, 1 minute and 15 seconds off from the leader…I knew I would have to make the time up in the road race, because it wasn’t going to…

HIGHLAND VILLAGE, Texas (BRAIN) — Dallas-Fort Worth area retailer Cadence Cyclery recently celebrated the opening of its second store, located 32 miles from its original location in McKinney, Texas. The new 4,000 square-foot shop opened as a Giant Partner Store in late November.
Giant USA’s retail merchandising specialists worked with owner Chad Plumlee in the design of the store’s retail space to select flooring, lighting, wall coverings, graphics and messaging to highlight both the Cadence Cyclery and Giant brands.
“The nice, clean space Chad found provided us all with the opportunity to build a store and give Cadence Cyclery a new and exciting way to showcase bicycles and connect with the community,” said…

North Shore Trail is a 18 mile out and back trail located near Grapevine, Texas that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, mountain biking & walking and is accessible year-round.
Reviews: By Nathan R. – Don’t be intimidated by the mountain bikers. The northshore trail was originally an equestrian trail before the horses were chased off by the hikers. Now we find the mountain bikers are chasing off the pedestrians, but a few simple tips can make this a great trail for everybody. The local mountain bike club does a great job maintaining these trails. And over the past few years they have cut almost 10 miles of additional trail making it a one way trail the whole way. When you run or hike here, go in the same direction as the bikes. This will more than cut in half the number of bikers you encounter. If you’re running it’s easier for a Bike to pass if you’re going in the same direction. Good bikers can pass if you hug the side of the trail without either party having to stop. Generally I don’t…

Earlier this week, a favorite blog of mine, “Lovely Bicycle,†wrote about beater bikes. Velouria’s angle was to spotlight a new line of inexpensive bikes with the brand name, “Beater,†that are designed to fill the same role as a run-of-the-mill beater bike would fill.
And it got me thinking — I don’t really have a beater bike of my own, do I? If I do need a bike I can hop on for a trip to the store, or to run an errand or two, or to serve as transportation in the rain, I don’t really have anything to fill that role, do I?
And then it occurred to me — I do. I’ve got that mountain bike. The one I never ride. The one I put the rear rack on because I was going to…

A proposed hike-and-bike trail through one of Dallas’ most scenic, and often overlooked, areas is heading down the path to construction.
Dallas County commissioners last week OK’d $3.7 million to help build the Chalk Hill Trail, approving an agreement with the city of Dallas to develop the four-mile corridor in west Oak Cliff.
The trail, long a focus for County Commissioner Elba Garcia, would follow an abandoned railroad line north from DART’s Westmoreland Station to around the intersection of West Davis Street and Chalk Hill Road.
Runners and cyclists are still a few years away from…

Apparently I misunderstood the forecast for today’s weather. I thought that more than once I heard that thunderstorms were scheduled to rumble in some time after midnight, along with rain.
With an electric wet forecast I figured I would not be swimming or getting any hot tub hydrotherapy this morning, let alone a bike ride in the noon time frame.
I figured wrong. No thunder, no rain, at least so…

Background:
A long, long time ago (let’s just say longer than some of my competitors from last weekend have been alive), I was an aspiring young Houston triathlete who had just finished an inconspicuous college running career at the University of Houston. Bob McCowen, the owner of Southwest Schwinn (aka Southwest Cyclery) and all-around great guy, helped me get my start in biking at the time. A couple years later, his son James McCowen told me about a 2-day stage race that he was directing for SWCC. “You should give it a tryâ€, he said, “it’s a time-based stage race with a pretty long time trial – you would do pretty goodâ€.
Fast forward to a year ago, after dropping 2 sports, I finally took his sage advice (I have never been a quick learner). The Fayetteville Stage Race is a race I’ve done for 2 years in a row now. In last year’s race, my stage win on Sunday’s stage in the Mens 3/4 field moved me into 5th overall and more…
