About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Creaking Crankarms

Texbiker.net Posted on March 22, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2016

I waited until 12:33 to leave home for today’s ride. I ate a snack of Rykrisp crackers, jelly, a banana and tortilla chips. For the ride I took a Kashi trail mix bar and 2 Kashi trail mix cookies for the stop in Huffman at the Chevron station. The RyKrisp crackers were not in grocery stores around me so I ordered them online. Back when I was a teenager I ate them but probably used more of them as carp bait.

The wait was to allow the clouds to thin out some and the temperature to get above 70 so I would not overdress. It was 75 when I left and by the time I returned home at 3:49 it was a nice 81. The clouds thinned some but I would call the sky overcast. Wind was not an issue today with the maximum speed less than 10 mph.

After riding north yesterday the route today was to Huffman via Atascocita and Walden. I added distance by taking Kings Row all the way to Atascocita Road and side streets into Walden before heading to Huffman over Lake Houston. In Huffman I rode north on FM2100 after finishing my snack at the Chevron station. The goal was to ride at least 33 miles to get below 100 miles remaining to reach my March goal. I was successful, biking 34.72 miles while averaging 15.4 mph. I was slower today probably because of the effort I used on yesterday’s ride. March miles increased to 407.7, this week I biked 143.94 miles and 1112 miles year to date. I have 98 miles left to reach my March goal of 505 miles.

While I was riding today I noticed a creaking sound whenever I pedaled with effort. It seemed to come from the crankset area. I stopped to tighten the quick releases on both wheels but this didn’t make any difference. When I got back to Kingwood I stopped at Bike Werks to see if they could identify the problem. They took a test ride and heard the noise. They thought it was the crank and tightened by the crank bolt half a turn. The noise went away and I pedaled in silence the last 2 miles home. I wanted to fix this so that next weekend’s ride in Stonewall TX at the LBJ 100 would go smoothly and quietly.

Yesterday I titled my ride commentary “Looking for Grand Texas” but I forgot to say whether I found it. The only thing I saw under construction was south of SR 242 to the west of the Flying J truck stop. There were a couple of pieces of equipment clearing trees on about 20 acres of land. On the north side I did see a RV trailer parked next to some trees and a large open area that was cleared years ago. Maybe that is where Grand Texas will be.

Tomorrow the weather is supposed to change as a mild cold front passes through. I doubt that will allow me to ride. Monday could be wet which leaves Tuesday as the most likely biking day. I am planning on 62 miles at the LBJ 100 which means I need 36 miles on other rides to hit the goal.

Support our veterans as they cycle through Texas

By Tom Quirk, CEO UnitedHealthcare of Texas        www.yourhoustonnews.com

Riding a bicycle is one of the great and simple joys of life. The wind in your face, the freedom to propel yourself forward, the challenge of the hill ahead and the exhilaration of coasting downhill. It’s a wonderful thing.

Ride 2 Recovery is a nonprofit that supports physical and psychological rehabilitation programs for thousands of injured veterans across the United States, featuring cycling as the core activity.

Comparing Bikes

Bike Noob

A funny thing happened as I was poking around in my blog analytics. I discovered that the readers of this blog really like bikes. Yeah, amazing, isn’t it? Wait a sec — you’ll see just what I’m getting at.
I can take a look at search terms used to find items on this blog, or search terms that will get people to this blog — whether they want to be here or not And over the last year, the item that keeps coming up as the most searched-for term is: bike comparison.
Back in 2011 I did a blog post on a new bike comparison website. There seemed to be enough interest that I put the site’s link on my home page in the “blogroll.” It keeps drawing the traffic. So much so, that when people search for anything remotely resembling “bike…

Austin Bike Advocacy Groups Merge

By Brandon Mulder        www.austinpost.org

Last month the bicycle advocacy groups Bike Austin and the Austin Cycling Association announced their plans to merge. Throughout 2014, two groups that have led the local fight for cycling-friendly policies and infrastructure will combine to become a single organization aimed at making Austin one of the top cycling cities in the country.
Since 1975, the Austin Cycling Association has focused on education, and regularly holds defensive bicycling courses and group rides for all levels of pedaler. Bike Austin, originally founded in 1996 as the League of Bicycling Voters, works with the City to improve cycling laws and infrastructure.
Going forward, the two organizations will be merging their leadership, but will keep the entities separate. They will be rechristened the Bike Austin Community Fund, which will act as the financial and…

Looking for Grand Texas

Texbiker.net Posted on March 21, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2016

The two reasons I selected today’s route was to ride at least 40 miles (I actually rode 41.27 miles) and to see what was happening at the new Grand Texas theme park that is supposed to be under construction at the intersection of SR 242 and US59 on the west side.

To vary the ride a little I exited Kingwood on Mills Branch Drive and Ford Road. Since I found the new exit through Woodridge Forest I haven’t used the Mills Branch route. The last time was January 11th of this year. Traffic is not that heavy on Mills Branch/Ford Road during the day. This also takes a couple of miles from routes when I go this way. Today I figured the 2 miles short would not cause me to bike less than my 40 mile target.

Once I reached Loop 494 and headed north the wind pushed me along nicely. Intervals 2 through 3 averaged 17.9 to 18.4 mph which built a cushion for when I hit the headwind on FM1314 going east and south on US59 back to Kingwood Drive before getting into Kingwood and home. Overall I averaged 16.1 mph which is surprising given the SSE 15 mph wind and 21 mph gusts. I wondered if the higher profile rims on the Stradalli would present any problems with the wind and I did not notice any. If anything they cut through the wind better than the Mavic rims on my Motobecane Le Champion CF. Intervals 6 and 7 were straight into the wind most of the time and I still averaged 15.1 mph. Maybe new bike excitement added the power.

On SR 242 west of US59 I came across the first big patch of Indian Paintbrush wildflowers I’ve seen this year. Next weekend I plan on riding the LBJ 100 in Stonewall, TX and the bluebonnets should be out in force.

click on the images to enlarge them

With the overcast sky it did not get overly warm with 75 when I started at 12:45 and 77 when I got back home at 3:56. I took a break at the Stripes station on FM1314 at Valley Ranch Parkway to recover from riding into the wind since I got onto FM1314 at Village Way and Old Houston Road. This stretch was almost directly into the wind and except for the trees and parallel traffic I probably would’ve rode much slower.

I continue to be impressed with the Stradalli RP-14 Carbon bike. This is the first bike in ages where the saddle that came with the bike is comfortable enough to keep. It is a Prologo Scratch. I bought a new Camelbak Podium waterbottle that is red and black accents to go with the bike colors.

Yesterday was a rest day. I took my wife to the medical center and then watched the University of Cincinnati Bearcats fall to Harvard in the NCAA basketball tournament. I should have went for a ride since the weather was beautiful. Maybe the Bearcats will go further next season.

I am making progress on the March mileage goal. I stand at 372.98 miles with 132.02 left to reach 505 miles. This week I biked 109.22 miles and 1078 miles year to date. The weather looks favorable for biking tomorrow but Sunday and Monday could be wet and cooler.
