About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

26th annual Beauty and the Beast rolling across Tyler Saturday

by Stephanie Frazier        www.kltv.com

From Tyler Bicycle Club:
This year marks the 26th Annual Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour and Freedom Ride in East Texas.
The Beauty and the Beast is annual event that takes cyclist through the rolling hills of East Texas including our famous “Killer Hill” aka “The Beast.” People of all ages come from all over the United States to participate in this event that benefits two worthy causes. This year the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warriors and to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of our own Alaina Cannon, and all those that courageously battle cancer daily.
The tour, which features several mile options ranging from 12.5 miles to 67 miles will begin at 9:00 a.m., as will…

Garage Flats

Bike Noob

Boy, I was excited to get out for a rare weekday afternoon ride! I hadn’t been on the bike in several days, and my body was craving for some fresh air and exercise.
I grabbed the bike and guided it between the garage wall and my car, out to the driveway where I was going to top off the tires with air. But something didn’t quite feel right.
I looked down at the rear tire. It was flat.
That was really odd, because the last time I had been out for a ride, everything was fine. I had no inkling that the tire had been punctured, or even that it was lower at the end of the ride than…

Gabriel’s Story: #myrideto Austin

by djcurtin            bicyclesportshop.com

It’s been really fun and inspiring to get to know Bryan, Katherine, and Gabriel and find out about their rides to becoming cyclists. Since we first started this, many folks have come in to check out our beginner cycling packages and have started their own #myrideto stories, many similar to Gabriel’s, below. Share your story with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and use the #myrideto hashtag and spread the love of bikes.

What made me decide to get into cycling?
Just a few months ago, I was going through a rough patch in my marriage and business. One day, my brother found two abandoned Trek mountain bikes at a job site, and knowing I liked bikes as a kid, he thought I would get a kick out of fixing them. Little did he know that I would take it to the level I did. At first, it started out like a nice little weekend project.  As I started fixing the bikes up and taking them out for rides, I started to get hooked. I began with only being able to ride about 5 miles on my…

Rocky Tuesday. BCGB backcountry. Intermediate pace, hard terrain

The Austin Mountain Bikers Meetup Group

Barton Creek Greenbelt – 360 Access (beside brick office building)
3755-B Capital of Texas Hwy., Austin, TX (map)
Look for the guy on the red Santa Cruz Nomad.
This not a ride for beginners.  The terrain is rocky, dangerous, difficult.  This is a drop ride meaning that if you are unable to keep pace, you may be left behind.
This week we may, if time allows, get into 2 miles of what is probably the…

League of American Bicyclists Visits Plano

by Richard Wezensky

City of Plano’s Trail System Planner, Renee Burke Jordan, invited local citizens and bicycle advocates to meet Steve Clark, a Bicycle Friendly Community Specialist from The League of American Bicyclists.
The League is visiting 100 communities this year, bringing their bicycle-friendly expertise directly to the local level — and Plano was on the priority list.
Steve was in town to experience first-hand the bicycle infrastructure in Plano. The meeting brought together citizens and public agency staff to discuss issues and strategies for improvements, provide an…

Maiden Ride of The Stradalli RP-14 Carbon

Texbiker.net Posted on March 19, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2016

Yesterday (Tuesday) I went to Bike Werks in Kingwood to pickup my assembled Stradalli RP-14 Carbon bike. I started to assemble it myself but when I got to the bottom bracket I did not have the tools to insert the bearings so I went to Bike Werks. They did an excellent job assembling the bike paying close attention to details I probably would have missed. Jeremy routed the cables away from the head tube so they would not rub, he wrapped the handle bar tape tight and lined up the overlaps just right. When I spun the rear wheel the rear hub sung. The brake levers were flat with the handle bar to make riding on the “hoods” easy.

The only work left for me was to install the Stradalli water bottle cages, move the Lezyne pump, seat bag, Garmin mount and sensors from my Motobecane Le Champion CF bike. I had to make a run to the hardware store for cable ties. I lowered the seat about an inch to match the measurement on the Motobecane. All of this did not take too long and I was ready to ride around 1:00.

I noticed the clouds getting heavier and the temperature dropped from 71 to 67 and then up to 68. Up to this time I had not noticed the flat rear tire. Here is a tire that has zero miles on it and already a flat. I pumped it up thinking maybe I bumped the valve or something but about 10 to 15 minutes later the tire was soft again. I pulled the tube out of the tire and did a water test to find the leak. This did take long when I found the hole about 8″ from the valve stem. I went out to the garage to get some patches and patched the tube, one time, two times and finally a third time. apparently patches can dry out just like rubber cement. The old patches would not stick. Putting the patched tube back in the tire and onto the rim I was ready to ride.

This is a picture my wife took as I was getting ready to leave on my new bike.

In the driveway with my new Stradalli RP-14 Carbon bike

In the driveway with my new Stradalli RP-14 Carbon bike

The plan was to ride to the south in case I needed to go by Bike Werks if there was a problem. I headed to Huffman via Atascocita and Walden. As I left home at 2:02 the temperature was 68 and the wind was 14 mph from the NNW under a cloudy sky. I started off on the streets of Kingwood differently than usual because I wanted to avoid the Kingwood High School traffic. As I rode I noticed the saddle nose was tilted down enough to let me slide forward and put more pressure on my hands. At the Hunters Ridge Village Park I stopped and adjusted the saddle nose up 1 click and continued the ride. The adjustment was good and I no longer felt the hand pressure. There will probably be some fine tuning on this and the saddle height.

At first I thought I would ride about 25 miles but as the ride progressed the bike was riding great so I went the usual route to Huffman and back. I biked 32.09 miles averaging 15.4 mph. This brought the week’s mileage to 67.95, March mileage to 331.71 ( leaving 173.29 miles to reach the 505 mile goal), and year to date miles to 1036.

While I was stopped at the Huffman Chevron a biker (I think his name is Nick) I had met a few months ago arrived along with his friend. He noticed my new bike and we talked about it and lots of other bike stuff. He told me about the Vredestein Volante TriComp Road tire he had on his Litespeed bike and how they stood up to the debris with no flats. By now the clouds had thinned out and the temperature was 75 so I removed my leg warmers for the ride back home. I was overdressed now with a short and long sleeve jersey under a wind breaker jacket. The bikers left before me heading west on FM1960. I thought I wouldn’t see them again but I passed the friend in the middle of the causeway and caught up to “Nick” at the west end of the causeway where he was waiting for his friend to catchup. I stopped to check and he said they were supposed to sprint to this point and he wasn’t sure why his friend had stopped. When I rode by him he was talking on his phone so I didn’t stop to see if there was a problem.

When I got back in Kingwood I rode by Bike Werks to let them know how the bike rode.

I got home at 5:15 with a partly cloudy sky and 76 degrees, a lot warmer than what I thought it would be when I started.

Veterans and healing Soldiers ride to recovery

by Monica Cortez Multimedia Journalist/Weekend Weathercaster    www.ktsm.com

(El Paso) KTSM — You’ve heard of the long road to recovery, and that is exactly what several wounded Soldiers and healing veterans are doing riding on the Ride 2 Recovery.
This is a unique challenge aimed toward veterans and soldiers who may have been wounded in combat.
It’s a 450 mile stretch from Houston to Fort Worth Texas.  Veterans and servicemembers from all over the country gather at the starting line in Houston for their six-day journey.

Cows and Crosswinds : A Fayetteville SR Recap

by Kathryn Hunter (photos: Jack Mott)        texasbikeracing.com

Fayetteville Stage Race Women’s Open Race Report

Fayetteville, located about halfway between Austin and Houston in rolling farm country, has a genuine small-town feel. There’s no Walmart, no bustling industrial quarter, no big chain hotels. The town isn’t putting on an act for tourists—it’s got its work boots on, a dusty rancher who’s more than happy to welcome you into his home but isn’t strapping on spurs and dropping “howdys” so you can snap a photo and say you’ve been out to where the buffalo roam. Unassuming, nostalgic, scenic in a diamond-in-the-rough sort of way, Fayetteville and its rural surroundings make for a memorable and entertaining two days of bike racing.
The Fayetteville Stage Race was my first real introduction to road racing in 2011, and I’ve been back every year since (in 2013, as a pregnant spectator).  Put on by the Southwest Cycling Club, the races are always well-organized, and the weather is typically crisp and sunny. This year, the climate wasn’t as…

Changing group road ride behavior

By Richard Fries        www.peopleforbikes.org

“We have met the enemy and he is us.”  –Walt Kelly, Pogo
When I helped pro cyclist Tim Johnson develop the first Ride on Washington in 2011, I figured we would be raising funds and awareness for PeopleForBikes while engaging elite athletes to support advocacy. That seemed like enough, right?
I also thought I could have an amazing five-day ride.
Turned out the “amazing ride” part would, in my opinion, ultimately provide a greater legacy for Tim, this ride, and this writer. Indeed, the funds and awareness are critical. But the “amazing” part of the ride is not how far or fast it rolls (both of which are amazing).  In addition to changing why we ride, this…

City will continue to make new bike lanes, creates advisory committee

By: Genevieve Curtis        www.kfoxtv.com

EL PASO, Texas–City Council has created a bike advisory committee instead of halting creation of new bike lanes.
Tuesday, City Rep. Dr. Michiel Noe proposed the city hold off from making any new bike lanes for a few months and instead focus on repairing and taking care of the existing bike lanes.
Noe presented slides of debris in bike lanes which forces cyclists not to use the lanes. He also showed slides where lanes had damage such as potholes, which deterred users.
But many in the local bike community said the solution was not to stop creating bike lanes.
City Council Rep Cortney Niland express her concerns that such a…

More bike lanes coming to El Paso

By Cindy Ramirez / El Paso Times

New bicycle lanes will continue to be implemented citywide with input from area cyclists and under stricter standards than years past, city officials said Tuesday.
“I believe on this one, everybody won,” Mayor Oscar Leeser said following a sometimes heated debate about the funding, implementation and use of bike lanes during a City Council meeting.
The council voted down a proposal by city Rep. Michiel Noe that the city stop spending money on…

Last minute adjustments before the R2R Texas Challenge

www.ktsm.com

FORT BLISS — After a 30-mile Project HERO group ride which started at the “break of dawn” on Fort Bliss in the frigid temperatures and gusty winds, it was time for a last minute adjustment for my bicycle.
Pain in my low back and knee indicated it was time for the bicycle seat to be moved.  After foot surgery, neck surgery, and herniated discs in my low back, I don’t want to risk bad form – especially on a 450 mile ride!
The Specialized “Ruby” Carbon bicycle was then taken apart and is…

Moving to Austin, should I sell my 180mm 26″ AM bike?

by foxphotog        forums.mtbr.com

Hi everyone.
I’ve recently learned of my acceptance into a Ph.D program at UT. I’m heading to Austin (from South Carolina) tomorrow morning to tour the school, visit, etc. I’m bringing my Scott Genius LT, and GT Ruckus dirt jumper, and hope to check out Walnut creek and Ninth Street DJ’s. I will have my girlfriend with me and I’m kind of limited on how much riding I can actually do.
My question is: Will a 180mm travel Scott Genius be way too much overkill for the Austin area? I work at a bike shop now and could get a sweet deal on a 29r, 2×10, 650b, or some other xc bike and sell the Genius. The thing is I would have to get the new bike before moving, as I would no longer be…

LBJ 100
Why join your ride?
Join our ride because there is something for everyone – from the rank beginner to the seasoned cyclist!  Routes of 10, 30, 42, 62, and 85 miles.  We like to focus on the family by offering family discounts; we emphasize the outdoors, and we are arguably the premier springtime cycling event in the glorious Texas Hill Country.  Our ride tag line, “A Ride to Preserve History,” is appropriate. Luci Baines Johnson (LBJ’s younger daughter) leads a narrated afternoon tour (by bicycle) of the historic landmarks on the ranch; we utilize three restored, rural Gillespie County Schools as rest stops. Plus, a ranger-led tour of the Texas White House is included in the registration. Simply show your ride bib number!
How long has your ride been around?
The initial LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour was in April 2008. The March 29 event this year will be our seventh annual.  Of course, we are also conducting the 2nd Annual LBJ 100 Individual Time Trial on the next day, Sunday, March 30.  It…

Riding Bikes On The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge In Dallas

Meanwhile, below the bridge there was an artisan market with food trucks and even more activities.
BikeDFW, was part of the event, which we shared with our friends from BikeTexas, Richardson Bike Mart , Mercy Street Community Bike Shop and many others. Throughout the day, thousands of participants came out to experience and enjoy the bridge from outside of their cars. Add that to some…

3 Days of Leg Resting

Texbiker.net Posted on March 18, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

Thank goodness for a few days of rest before I tackled today’s ride. The legs were called on for several stretches of headwind pedaling. I saw a Houston Chronicle alert that the wind was going to kick up this afternoon but it said northwest Harris county would be more likely to be where it was. But I think it slid east to to northeast Harris and Montgomery counties. I left home at 1:03 under a brilliant blue sky, 74 degrees and a 15 mph south wind with 23 mph gusts. The gusts were more steady than I thought they would be. Normally by the time I finish the ride the wind will die down some but not this ride. When I got home at 3:56 the temperature was a great 80 degrees, the sky was still a nice blue and the wind was the same as when I left.

With the south wind my usual route selection would be to go south into the wind at the start but I chose to ride north to New Caney and then west to Gene Campbell Road before turning back to home and into the wind. The route totaled 35.86 miles which was the reason I wanted to go north and thanks to the starting tailwind my average speed came in at 15.9 mph. I built up some extra time so that when I was slowed by the wind I could still keep the average speed up. Being off the bike since last Friday meant the legs were rested although Sunday afternoon I spent 4 hours on an extension ladder re-fixing the ceiling fan that I thought I fixed on last Thursday. This time I think the fix will stay.

After today’s mileage I crossed the 1000 mark for the year coming in at 1004 miles. March so far totals 299.62 miles. This leaves 205 miles to reach the March goal of 505 miles. I’ve only biked 1 day this week so today’s miles is it.

I am waiting for the bike shop to call so I can go pickup my new Stradalli RP14 bike. They said they could finish the assembly today.

Tomorrow’s weather forecast calls for partly cloudy sky and 73 degrees, slightly cooler than today.
