About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biking from Austin to Denver
www.youaremycelebrity.com
… I wish I could do it! 1400 Miles is a new campaign and film following Texas craft beer brewers cycling from Austin to Denver in 14 days to raise awareness for prostate cancer. How freaking cool is that?
Austin Beer Works hosts a party tomorrow, Tuesday, from 6-9pm to celebrate the cyclists and kick off the ride.
Motivated by NXNW’s Brewmaster Don Thompson’s inspirational recovery from prostate cancer, the two-week ride will…

Do you need a ‘black box’ camera for your bike?
Rideye is a video camera that goes on your handlebars or helmet. Its continuous footage can be examined after an accident.
by Tim Hornyak        news.cnet.com

Accidents with cars killed 677 cyclists in the US in 2011, according to the Department of Transporation. Another 48,000 were injured.
But do cyclists need a “black box” to record video that could be used in a crash investigation?
Rideye is a high-def video camera that records footage from the cyclist’s point of view. The device, which is in the pre-production phase, could very well be a vital tool following a…

Fort Davis Cyclefest Bear Mountain (Video Presentation)
Pedal Pushers
Fort Davis Cyclefest
Fort Davis, Texas
September 21, 2013
The Fort Davis Cyclefest features a 75 mile scenic loop over the Davis Mountains. There are three major hills ranging from 1-3 miles of climb and one “heartbreak” (11%) hill after one thinks he is finished with the hills on the route.

Earlier this year I received a new “toy” from my boys: a GoPro Hero 3 video camera. Fort Davis was my big chance to show shots heretofore not available using my point and shoot camera. I could show climbs and downhills and document people passing me left and…

Finally Back on the Bike Again – September 24th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 24, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

Today is the first ride since my crash on September 3rd. I went for physical therapy this morning and one of the exercises was the stationary bike. I rode for 6 minutes and my left leg felt good so I took this as a sign to get back on my bike. To limit the speed and distance I rode my Motobecane 700HT mountain bike on the Kingwood Trails. One of my concerns was the muscles in my butt around the sit bones. This is where I landed in the crash and sitting on hard surfaces caused a problem. I figured a bike seat ought to be a challenge. This turned out to be the case as I road over bumps in the trail. At first it did not bother me but as the miles increased I stood up more and more.

The crash took place 3 weeks ago today. Riding on the trails had a fall flavor even though the temperature was in the lower 90’s.

This was the first ride with my Garmin Edge 510 to get used to how it works. There are several differences from the Edge 500 that got crushed in the crash. After the ride I figured out how to change the data shown on the first screen but I think the lap distance needs to be marked by pushing the left button on the 510 while riding. In the 500 the lap distance could be preset at various distances.

I plan on riding more this week but only on my mountain bike. Next week I think the road bike will be an option.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup September 23rd

Texas hall of fame adds Amarillo BMX champ
By RUSSELL ANGLIN        amarillo.com

For BMX champion Danny Wall, competing in his sport of choice can be a nerve-racking ordeal. But if all goes well, he said, the rewards more than make up for the anxiousness felt before the starting gate drops.
“A lot of times when you do OK, it takes two or three days to come down from being so excited and happy, even though you’re exhausted,” he said.
Wall, a 49-year old remodeling contractor, was inducted Saturday into the…

New Shop in The Woodlands/Houston called Cycles TX (Santa Cruz, Niner, Giant, Surly)
by Blk02        forums.mtbr.com/texas

I found a new shop in The Woodlands, TX that just opened called Cycles TX. They carry a few brands that I have not seen in the Houston area before. I only ride mountain bikes so I am not sure what road brands they carry, but several of the road bikes were over 15k and one of them in the front window was around 26k . It also looks like they carry a full line of Enve products. I saw several Enve stems out on display and a lot of Enve boxes in the back. The shop is open but I don’t think they have had their grand opening yet. They are across the street from…

Howson wins 2013 u23 time trial world title

Craddock: Time to put the work to good use in Florence
By Gregor Brown

FLORENCE, Italy (VN) — American Lawson Craddock stormed through the 2013 season, signed a professional contract with Argos-Shimano, and placed fifth on Monday in the under-23 time trial at the UCI Elite Road World Championships. For Craddock (Bontrager), however, the true objective is Friday’s hilly road race in Florence, Italy.
“I’m not disappointed with today at all,” Craddock said on Monday. “I’m happy with it, but I do have a lot more to give, I can tell you that.”
The 21-year-old Texan, the 19th starter in Monday’s U23 contest, led the time trial after clocking a 51:31.35 in the 42.7-kilometer time trial. Craddock watched his name slowly move down the…

Interbike Dirt Demo 2013 Recap
by Shawn McAfee            www.texasmountainbiketrails.com

This is by far the coolest event I have ever participated in. So many bikes to ride and so little time. I was able to test ride 13 different bikes for a total of 42ish miles of singletrack over 2 days. Besides being beat I definitely was able to notice a lot of really interesting trends and learned a lot about the bikes overall.

First up, here is a list of all 13 bikes I demo’d at the 2013 Interbike Dirt Demo with a notation of (H) for hardtail, (FS) for Full Suspension, (C) for Carbon, (S) for steel and (A) for…

Catharsis abated.
BikeDenton
Sometime during the weekend around May graduation, my Schwinn Tourist was stolen off my front porch.

It was not a spectacular bike in any semblance of the word, and when Howard handed BikeDenton to Devin and I last year upon his ceremonious exit from our beloved Denton, I quietly felt sheepish about riding on such lowly a frame while writing in this space. Foolish, I know.

But this bike was a dear friend to me; my loyal steed throughout my collegiate career at UNT. To have it just disappear from my home at the point my studies were over and degree completed seemed oddly unfitting. I followed all the right procedures, filed the right police reports, and patiently waited, hoping to hear something… anything…
