About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Samantha Ching        forcechange.com
Target: City officials of Fort Worth, San Antonio, Brownsville, and Austin, Texas; Dallas City Council
Goal: Applaud Texas city officials for supporting the growing bike-friendly movement state-wide and expanding infrastructure for cycling.
After Texas cities’ obesity rates ranked among the highest in the country, many cities have begun expanding bike infrastructure to address a massive public health problem and respond to the demand for sustainable living environments.
Drawing inspiration from leading bike-friendly cities like Portland, Texas city officials have “embraced” bike-friendly improvements like bike-share programs, expanded bike trails, and…

How is the scene in Lubbock?
by parser        forums.mtbr.com/texas
I’ve used the search feature but find very little.
How much trail nearby?
Is it possible to ride year round?
How is the local economy and work situation? I work in healthcare IT.
What is the character of the town? Is it blue collar, agricultural, etc. at a glance looks like it might be a college town.
Air quality? This is important because I’m having trouble breathing here in…

The Daily Texan’s guide to biking in Austin
By Stuart Railey        www.dailytexanonline.com

Whether you’re too broke for gas, too environmentally conscious to own a car or too lazy to walk to class, a bike can be useful for anyone. This stylish mode of transportation requires upkeep and niche knowledge. The Daily Texan has created a brief guide to biking around Austin just for you.
Fix
Austin’s extreme temperatures cause bikes a great deal of wear and tear. Brake cables stretch, gears rust and chains break, but even a minor level of…

Servicing a DT Swiss Hub
by John        www.austinbike.com

My DT Swiss hub (actually an old Magura Hugi hub that is a DT Swiss OEM) has always been louder than just about anything on the market.  When I would get it serviced, it quieted down for a few weeks but then went back to its noisy self.  When I figured out how easy it was, this is a quick service that can be done quickly and often.
To begin with, you need to obviously take the wheel off the bike and remove the cassette.  This is pretty straightforward, but you will need a lockring tool and a chain whip.  Look here for details on how to…

Reasons to ride
By SUSAN JOHNS, Staff Reporter        www.wiscassetnewspaper.com

You might know him as “Tree” Lee.
Growing up in Boothbay Harbor, Chris Lee picked up the nickname for being tall.
Now the St. Andrews Hospital-born, Boothbay Region High School basketball standout is 37 and living in Brookline, Mass. And that nickname? Turns out, it fits for a second reason.
Trees are strong.
Lee lost his father Robert Lee to colon cancer in 1997. A year later, one of Chris Lee’s older brothers, Allen Lee, was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He died in 2011. …

…On October 20, when he’s riding in Texas, he’ll be solo on a tandem bike, like his brother was. But the younger brother is turning his own challenge up a notch: He doesn’t plan to finish at the 20-mile mark. He’s going for…
