About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Colossal Fail!!! – September 3rd Bike Ride and Crash

Texbiker.net Posted on September 3, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

Today’s ride was a COLOSSAL FAIL. I left home at 1:52 with the temperature hovering at 99.4 at home. The sky was blue and almost no clouds except for a few small ones. Since I biked to the north on Sunday I decided today to ride south. As the ride moved along I thought I should add some mileage so I headed on my Eagle Springs – Walden – Huffman route which usually totals 34 miles or so.

I biked along at a good pace south on Timber Forest before turning left onto Eagle Springs Parkway. At Will Clayton Parkway I went right heading east toward W. Lake Houston Parkway. I thought I was early enough to get past Atascocita High School before dismissal but I didn’t. As I approached the first exit from the high school I saw cars backed up waiting to cross Will Clayton. Before I knew what happened a teenage girl in a silver Honda like car edged forward and then pull right in front of me. I grabbed my brakes but it didn’t help and I slammed into the side of her car. I went flying. I am not sure where but I ended up on the concrete. Maybe I went up on the trunk and then down. After I landed I started to pick my self up. By now the teenage girl stopped her car in the median and yelled “Are you okay?”. I yelled back “No”. She then said she thought I was turning onto the sidewalk behind me and got back in her car and drove off. In the meantime I walked over to the shade and sat on the curb. I could see my left knee swelling up and my left elbow too.

Several people stopped to ask if I was okay. I told everyone no but I called my wife to come get me. One of the people who saw part of what happened was an Atascocita EMS officer. He called for an ambulance and asked if I wanted to go to the hospital. I was able to move. Before the ambulance arrived a fire truck pulled up and not too long after that a Humble ISD police car and several Harris County Precinct 4 constables arrived. I walked over to the ambulance and went inside so they could check my vital signs and other stuff. When they were done I climbed out of the ambulance back to the shaded sidewalk to wait for my wife to arrive. The Humble ISD officer asked some questions and filled out a report. Not too much later the principle of the high school walked up and asked how I was doing. She asked if I could identify the student but I did not get a license number or anything solid. The girl wore a red top was about all I remember.

Assessing the damage to my bike:

  • the left handle bar snapped off below the brake lever
  • bar tape unraveled
  • Garmin Edge 500 screen broke ( I thought it was beyond using but as we drove north on W. Lake Houston I heard the Garmin chirp “ride resumed”. I was able to download the ride when I got home.)
  • helmet will need to be replaced
  • left Shimano Ultegra brake lever scuffed up

I was surprised the damage was not more. There may be other parts once I try to ride again. My helmet did it’s job. My head hit the pavement hard. The Motobecane frame looks unmarked (probably because I was under it).

No idea when I will be back on the bike. I need to get the damaged repaired first and get over the pain.

Update on my Sunday flat problem. I checked the leaking tube and the 2 patches I put on over the wire holes leaked. The patches looked good to the eye but failed the water test. Since I patched those spots at least three times I threw the tube away and put a new on.

Bicycling on Rural highways
by savanni        bicycleaustin.info
So, I’m moving out past Driftwood.  It’s a done deal and I’ve already gotten some of my stuff out there.  On the trips out, I’ve been scoping out the highways and getting kinda a good feeling about biking on them.

First, I always remember how courteous the drivers were on FM 969 when I biked from Austin to Bastrop.  No honking, no aggressiveness, they just moved into the other lane and passed me.

So, I’m interested in your opinions of these freeways if you’ve biked them before:

* FM3237 / Old Kyle Freeway between Wimberley and Kyle — 60mph speed limit, minimal shoulders, but the stretch I’ve driven had very good visibility and not a whole lot of traffic.  I would guess one car every 30 seconds to…

Bicycle Blue Book
by Urban Jeff        urbanvelo.org

Most people are probably familiar with the venerable Kelly Blue Book, a price guide for used automobiles. Not surprisingly, some enterprising folks have endeavored to create the Bicycle Blue Book, which provides a guideline for pricing used bikes. The BBB is not nearly as thorough as the KBB, but it’s still in the beta phase. Check out www.bicyclebluebook.com

Substitute Wheel – September 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2016

On Sunday I normally ride when I get home from church. I do this because I ride and get back home to eat around 1:30. Today when I walked to the garage to leave and performed the tire squeeze ritual the rear tire was flat. In order to not waste time fixing the flat (probably the same one I had yesterday on the rear tire) I grabbed another rear wheel to replace the flat tire quickly. My spare wheelset is a Bontrager model that use to ride daily on my previous road bike. When I bought my Motobecane Le Champion CF I retired the Bontragers to backup status for time like this. All I needed to do was air the tire and hit the road.

Rolling out the driveway at 11:45 I planned on going north to Community Drive and then through Valley Ranch. Today’s route mileage was 26.16 at a 15.2 mph average speed. One thing I noticed is the gearing on the Bontrager must be different from the Mavic wheel I normally use. Moving through the rear cogs to the position I normally ride at did not produce the same speed. I went one more cog and this helped my speed. I think this accounts for the lower average speed.

Also I could feel the new rear wheel more when I hit a bump. I think the different design and spoke count changes the “ride” of the wheels. Maybe I aired the tire up more than I do on the Mavic rim.

The scattered clouds did not hold the sun back much so the temperature was quite hot ranging from 90 to 96 at the finish. I stopped at the Stripes store on FM1314 to fill my water bottle and check the Garmin Edge 500 temperature reading: 102.3. This was after it sat in the shade for 5 minutes or so while I was inside the store.

I will take Labor Day off and probably bike on Tuesday. It is forecast to be 100 on Tuesday. I will patch the rear tire after lunch today.
