About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

UT Police Gear Up To Prevent Bike Thefts
www.keyetv.com        Video
With a price tag of hundreds perhaps thousands of dollars, a bicycle may be the most expensive item a student brings with them to campus.  And with the fall semester just around the corner, the University of Texas is bracing for a spike in bicycle thefts.  In just a few weeks the population at the University of Texas will explode to 70,000 students and faculty.  And the bad guys will be looking at each one of them as a potential target.
The increasing popularity of bicycles as a mode of transportation– especially on campus– is making bikes very popular with thieves.  Bicycle thefts are up nationwide with 1.5 million bicycles stolen every year. But…

As cities and towns across Texas increase their bicycle facilities by not only adding bike lanes but adding bike share programs in downtown areas, it has become more important than ever for Texans to be aware of cyclists on the road. In certain areas of Texas, bicycles are one of the chosen modes of transportation, and drivers have learned to navigate the roads with them; not so in other areas of our state. Share the Road, Texas is a statewide outreach campaign sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to inform and encourage cyclists and drivers about…

Not There Yet – July 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 23, 2016

Riding to the south today and then east to Huffman in the quest for 900 miles this month. I am getting close. We are supposed to be in the peak of summer according to the SciGuy in the Houston Chronicle. The next 10 days are the time when the average temperature is the highest. No rain in the forecast for that time will help the heat stay up there. During today’s ride it was 86 to 95 degrees with humidity 65% dropping to 43% when I got home at 1:27. I started a little later than I planned rolling out the driveway at 10:43. I should have hit the road around 10 AM but the great legs of yesterday were not so great today.

The route was 33.03 miles long so it wasn’t enough to get to the 900 but I am oh so close with 889.90 miles. I should make the 900 on tomorrow’s ride. I am wondering what route I should ride to cross this big threshold. There are several hours before I have to decide.

Today I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a Diet Pepsi break and while I was there I saw evidence a sticky situation I biked into yesterday. I rode into the Shell station at the corner of US59 and FM1314 and ran over some gum. It stuck to my front tire and proceeded to send fine threads of gum on the frame. I thought I got all of this off but today I spotted some threads I missed. The gum was real soft from the heat so it was messy. Today thanks to the dirt getting on the gum threads it turned from light green to black and it would not wipe off. I ended up getting a wet towel from the restroom with soap on it and that finally got rid of it. Just like gum on a shoe, gum on a bike tire causes a big mess.

The weather for tomorrow’s record attempt is forecast to repeat today: 97 degrees and partly cloudy.

Only 44 To Go – July 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2013 by Rick AnkrumDecember 23, 2016

The legs felt great today. I wanted to pick a route about 35 miles long to get closer to the 900 mile mark for July and today’s New Caney – Casey Ridge – Roman Forest route did just that at 35.29 miles. This puts me at 856.87 miles for the month, only 44 from my goal. Year to date miles are 4182. I checked my average speed at 22 miles and had to look twice to be sure I wasn’t seeing wrong: 16.8 mph. Looking at the interval average speeds in the slide below shows 1 at 18.4 mph and 2 at 17+ mph.

Fortunately the wind helped me for the first 20 miles or so coming from the south. When I got to US59 to go south I picked up the headwind and it stayed with me until Kingwood Drive. Scattered clouds did hide much of the sun and the temperature reflected it. When I started the ride at 10:13 it was 86 degrees and 67% humidity. I did not stop for a break along the route other than to refill my water bottle in New Caney. The one drawback about this route was no stores have Diet Pepsi fountain drinks. As a result the total time and riding time were only 7 minutes apart: 2:28:12 and 2:11:54 respectively.

Generally the roads are good on this route except for the section of Roman Forest Blvd from Peach Creek to US59 was like a washboard. The shoulder on FM1485 is about 3 feet wide except for the approaches to the two bridges where it widens out to 8 feet or more.
