US Postal Service celebrates cycling with four bicycle stamps – road bmx touring and children riding

The US Postal Service has issued four stamps celebrating bicycles and cycling. They’re Forever stamps, good for the standard First Class 1oz rate anytime you decide to use them. They showcase a kid riding, touring/commuting, road cycling and BMX. Here’s the official blurb from the USPS:

GHORBA will be holding a group ride at the Lake Bryan trails located in Bryan, Texas this Saturday June 16th at 10:00am. If you’ve never rode Lake Bryan this is a great opportunity to explore 20+ miles of singletrack spread out across two seperate trails. While not the most technical trail in Texas they do offer enough excitement for most beginner and intermediate riders plus they are well shaded which is appreciated this time of the year. 2012 Dirty Kanza 200 recap

I rode the Dirty Kanza 200 last weekend. It’s a 200 mile gravel road race with exploding popularity. What started as 36 people starting in a parking lot a few years ago grew to 420 men and women of all ages riding the 2012 race. That’s right, men and women racing alongside each other. Did you race the MP crit last week? How did it go? I thought it might be helpful to some if I break down this fun course and give some helpful hints on how to be successful on this course.

Above you’ll see a map of the course. The course is roughly .75 miles long, which makes it a shorter lap than any other course in Houston. The Iceman Cometh – June 11th Bike Ride

After a day off I biked today. The summer weather rolled in with the heat index supposed to be over 100 today. I wanted to get an early start to beat the heat and I kinda did that leaving at 10:37 AM. I delayed the start by watching the Tour of Switzerland. Even then the temperature already hit 89 degrees with 66% humidity. When I got back home at 2:02 it was 95 degrees with 49% humidity. Partly cloudy skies held the sun back some and the SSW 11.5 mph wind proved beneficial when I rode with with. Riding into the wind slowed me down some but on the 31.81 mile route I averaged 15.6 mph with 21.4 mph as the max. Average cadence at 78.4 RPM was a little lower than I thought it would be.

The ride went without incident except at the Huffman Chevron where the ice delivery truck almost drove over my feet as I sat on the curb under the fuel canopy. I thought for sure they saw me since they hauled two loads of ice past me before the incident. I jumped up when the big truck start coming in my direction to get out of the way. The man in the passenger seat stuck his head out to say they were sorry and the trucked moved over slightly to get out from under the fuel island canopy.

Riding time totaled 2:02:34 plus 29:15 stopped. June miles now total 297.7 and YTD miles reached 3088.08. The heat will be here for the rest of the week. Link to RideWithGPS.com data and map.

Now that’s it’s warmin up here in our fair state I decided to get my self on the trail earlier than usual. I was on the trail and rollin at 6:45am. Man let me tell you, that was a great time ! Especially when I took my sunglasses off so I could see

HBC Urban Challenge Ride Ride

Spring Creek Greenway gets $100K for bike trails

The Spring Creek Greenway could add another six miles of bike trails in 2013 as a result of a $100,000 Texas Parks and Wildlife National Recreational Trail Grant recently approved by Montgomery County commissioners.

Robert Collins, special counsel to Precinct 3 Commissioner Ed Chance, said the $100,000 grant has a 25 percent match from the county, which can be paid through in-kind volunteer hours, and will provide five or six new miles of multipurpose trails near the Flint Ridge trailhead.
