About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Chip’n Seal Goes Away – June 9th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 9, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJune 9, 2012

The last time I rode this route on 5/18/2012 a section of FM1485 west of US59 sported the dreaded chip’n seal road surface. At the time I feared this might be permanent but today I thought enough time passed so I went that way again. Thankfully the chip’n seal surface got replaced with some nice and smooth asphalt. There is a short section in the left turn lane at Gene Campbell Road still waiting resurfacing but it will probably disappear soon.

My start time got delayed some to 10:45 because of a meeting at my church. We want to start a men’s group and needed a planning session today. With the later start I thought the heat would be higher but thanks to the rain during the night the temperature was not bad with a 81 – 89 range but the humidity at the start was a moist 76%. By the time I finished it dropped to 58%. While I stopped at the Star Express Exxon in Porter a man filling his car talked with about how he had just moved back to Houston from West Texas after a year there and how much higher the humidity was here. He said he lived here before he moved but got used to the dryness quickly and missed it. A few minutes later a woman gassing up asked about my route. She said a co-worker biked over by I-45 and rode to US59, the opposite of what I do. Partly cloudy skies and a very light 4 mph east breeze made for a nice ride.

When I got to the 30 mile point I checked my Garmin Edge 500 for my average speed and surprising it showed 16.5 mph. I did not realize the pace I rode. The full route ended up at 35.19 miles and the final average speed was 16.3 mph according Garmin Connect. For some reason SportTracks dropped it to 15.9 mph. Riding time totaled 2:12:57 with 27:53 stopped. My max speed was 22.7 mph on Garmin Connect with an average cadence of 83 RPM. Tomorrow I have a church meeting in the afternoon so I will probably not ride. So as the week ends my mileage standings: 191.79 miles this week, 265.89 miles in June, 3,056.27 miles YTD. H-E-B pledges $250,000 to hike-and-bike trail improvements
By Tara Merrigan        AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
The H-E-B supermarket chain pledged $250,000 to the Trail Foundation’s $5 million “Campaign for the Trail” on Thursday, putting the foundation’s fundraising total just over $4 million.

H-E-B’s contribution will go toward the two-pronged vision for the improvement of the hike-and-bike trail along Lady Bird Lake: $3 million will be given to the city to help pay for a boardwalk that will complete the trail’s circuit around the lake, and the remaining money will be placed in the foundation’s endowment for the upkeep and…

Rain Cooperates – June 8th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2012

During the night we got almost .6″ of rain. We needed the rain and coming during the night meant by the time to leave on my ride the streets dried out. This is the best of both worlds. With this 23.72 mile ride my YTD miles crossed the 3,000 mark to 3,021.07 miles. I usually don’t reach this until late August or early September. My ride was shorter than my recent ones since I need to go on an errand this afternoon. The temperature is lower this morning with the rain; 80 degrees at the start and 82 at the end. Humidity moved up to 65% from 44% yesterday. A light 7 mph NNE breeze moved the air around some but not enough to help with the sweat. I was soaked at the end with perspiration.

Riding time was 1:32:17 with only 5:54 stopped. Average speed was 15.4 mph, max speed was 22.3 mph and average cadence was 79.6 RPM. Mileage this week is 156.6 and June is 230.7. Link to RideWithGPS.com data and map.

Tomorrow I plan on a longer ride. Weather shows a 30% chance of rain for Saturday.

A board on the shop’s website streams the latest rides and climbing leaders. …

Simple Motorist Wisdom
by Steve A        Dallas Point-to-Point
Mostly stuff I hear from motorists at work regarding cycling is pretty silly, irrelevant, or even almost threatening if I were inclined toward paranoia. I really do NOT need to hear fantasies about cyclists as “hood ornaments.” On rare occasions, however, a pearl will come my way from a motoring co-worker. Yesterday was such a day.

Yesterday, I bet on the come that I would not need rain gear. I lost that bet. In the process, however, some simple motorist wisdom came my way. Without any intention of insulting my loyal reader, my own experience is that engineers have an unusual level of insights about things compared to “regular people.” As it turned out, this…

Bicycling is good for El Pasoans, but El Paso ignores bicycles
By Guerrero Garcia        borderzine.com
EL PASO – The winds whistled by swiftly as I held a tight grip on the handlebars on bumpy pavement pocked with potholes and loose gravel. Suddenly, I was startled by a truck passing me too closely and lost my balance, falling off the bicycle. The truck didn’t bother to stop.

I was fortunate enough to not get seriously injured, but other cyclists have not been as lucky. Just a few days ago, a 54-year-old man riding his bicycle east on Pebble Hills Blvd. was hit by a Texas state…
