About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

TPWD 2012 Texas Outdoor Recreation Plan

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) seeks public comment on the draft of the 2012 Texas Outdoor Recreation Plan (TORP) which identifies outdoor recreation issues of statewide importance, and acts as a guide on how to best administer Texas’ apportionment of the federal Land and Water Conservation Funds.
This plan is required in order to maintain state eligibility to continue receiving funds through the LWCF State and Local Assistance Program; the only federal source of funds partnering with states and local governments that is solely dedicated to protecting conservation and recreation lands for future generations of Americans.
Public feedback has been obtained in the development of the TORP through a variety of surveys. The draft is available for comment until June 22, 2012 at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/grants/.
Comments regarding the 2012 TORP draft can be sent to rec.grants@tpwd.state.tx.us. For more information, please contact Local Park Grants Manager, Dana Lagarde at (512) 389-8175.

Upcoming Public Meeting for Buffalo Bayou Trail
Transformation of Buffalo Bayou Park, one of Houston’s most iconic green spaces, is well underway. With an historic $30 million catalyst gift from the Kinder Foundation, a strong public-private partnership has been created to include Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP), City of Houston led by the Houston Parks & Recreation Department, and Harris County Flood Control District. BBP has been charged with leading the enhancements of the 160-acre, 2.3-mile bayou stretch from Shepherd Drive to Sabine Street.
Likened to Houston’s own Central Park, the ambitious $55 million project will:

  • Restore the bayou to a more natural and self-sustaining version of what exists today.
  • Reintroduce native park landscape.
  • Add amenities to enhance safety and visitor experience.

After two years of design and engineering, trail work is being constructed and additional improvements are slated to begin this summer. The entire project is expected to be complete in mid-2015. See the Master Plan.
Buffalo Bayou Partnership invites you to learn about the vision for this project and how the upcoming construction may impact your use of the park on June 27th @ 6 PM.

Lone Star State Mountain Bike Trails are Under Fire – IMBA
A message from Jenn Dice, IMBA Government Affairs Director

“This month I have seen some of the biggest attacks against mountain bikers in many years of working for better trail access.
Old-guard groups have distorted the facts about mountain biking’s impact in an attempt to derail the tremendous momentum behind a new trail system at Big Bend National Park in Texas. Read about the Big Bend project here.
Can you believe this misleading headline?

Big Bend Breaks Ground On Single-Track Bike Racing Trail — Precedent-Setting Embrace of Converting Park Backcountry to Thrill-Sport Venues

Or what about these recently published attacks?

“While hikers would be technically allowed, they would have to dodge speeding bikers.”
“The advantages of the double track (jeep road) are that the hiker can proceed on one of the tracks or jump to safety if he/she encounters a biker. Danger is increased if bikers and hikers share a single track.”
” Now the problem with a multi-use mountain biker-hiker trail at Big Bend, aside from the legal and aesthetic (The park “forgot” to do the environmental paper work) is one of safety.”

In fact, the trail has been designed with excellent sightlines and moderate grades to encourage a friendly hiking and bicycling experience. Read more of IMBA’s response.
Help IMBA stop a few outspoken recreation opponents from spoiling a good idea. Give to the Trail Access Fund now.
Your support will fund the attorneys, professional advocates and trail designers that will protect your right to ride trails in Texas. IMBA is working in many areas to help parks be more relevant to today’s recreating public, especially kids.
Currently there is mountain biking in 44 national parks, and more are asking for IMBA’s help to plan for trails for bicycles. Mountain biking gets visitors — kids and families— out of cars and gives them a chance to experience the sights and sounds of our amazing national parks.

Almost Made It To 3,000 – June 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2012

The rain did not make an appearance so I rode my bicycle. Maybe tomorrow says the weatherman. We could use some rain though. I did notice the air felt cooler today especially at the start when I was on a short stretch of greenbelt trail with plenty of shade. The partly cloudy sky, calm wind and the temperature of 86 to 92 was inviting. When I finished at 1:56 the humidity was 46%. Around here any time the humidity is below 70% it is a dry day.

I went north today on a route I use frequently. Mileage came in at 30.5 at a 15.7 mph average speed. As I traveled south along US59 I felt like I wasn’t putting out much effort so I moved to a smaller rear gear and increased my cadence. I wanted to get my max speed higher than yesterday’s 19.9 mph. So my max speed ended up at 24.8 mph with my  average cadence of 78.0 RPM indicates that I wasn’t putting out much effort. My start was later than I prefer (11:08 AM) so I did not take any long rest stops.

With today’s ride my weekly miles stand at 132.88, June is up to 206.98 and YTD almost got to 3,000 at 2997.36. Link to RideWithGPS.com data and map.

Wahoo Fitness BlueSC bike sensor ships for iPhone, fixie owners rejoice
By Jon Fingas            www.engadget.com

Summer cycling is about to get a lot more… precise. The Wahoo Fitness BlueSC sensor we saw back in April is now shipping, giving iPhone 4S and new iPad owners a Bluetooth 4.0 tracker for a bike’s pedal cadence, speed and long-term performance through a trio of sensors. As you take that victory ride down…

Saying Hello and asking for opinions! (upgrade Components or Upgrade Bike!)
by SasTahmass            forums.mtbr.com
Whats up Guys. I’ve been a member on here but never really posted, just looked around. I need some help. I have a 2010 Gary Fisher Wahoo (not the greatest bike but it does the job) deciding whether I should upgrade almost all components or get a whole new bike. I purchased this as a starter bike and really got into MTB and have pretty much decided either to upgrade the bike completely or upgrade the components and get a FS 26 later down the line. I was planning on pretty much only keeping the frame of this bike and ditching everything else and upgrading. Do you think it is worth upgrading the Components to have an awesome…

NE Texas and tires and thorns. What do you do?
by CajunJamie        forums.mtbr.com
I ride up in the DFW area. I bought a pair of $20 Bontrager mud tires a month ago and have ridden a lot around Rowlett Creek and Big Cedar with no problems.

Yesterday I bought a new Cannondale Trail 6 with the small block 8 tires and not 10 minutes into the ride I have a flat. The thorn looked like a bee stinger. When the tire went flat, I felt it and compared to my other tires, was very thin and flimsy. I couldn’t believe how soft this tire felt.

Until I go tubeless, I am going to put the Bontrager tires from my other bike on this Cannondale. That said, short of going tubeless, what do you all do to…

Guessing Wrong
by Steve A        Dallas Point-to-Point

Weather in North Texas can be “interesting.” This morning, it was 79F when I left for work. The weather lady on television (I DO miss Jennifer Lopez doing weather) was somewhat noncommittal. “40% chance” combined with “heavy rain and thunderstorms” is definitely a “don’t blame me” forecast.

Still, my only concession was to bring along a few plastic bags to cover bag contents and saddle “just in case.” …

Doss finished up the year by giving away a bike donated by Bicycle Sport Shop.  Any student who walked or biked to school at least 70 times since October was eligible to…

City Council Approves On-Street Cycling Plan

Tea party opposition to bike plan falls short in McKinney, Texas
by Brian Bearden        Plano Top News Examiner
McKinney, home of “Bike the Bricks” races, approved an on-street bicycle master plan Tuesday and will use a grant to add signs to mark bike lanes and begin to “retrofit” existing streets.

Most of the seats in the council chambers on Tennessee Street were taken as cyclists and tea party activists traded passionate arguments during a public hearing about how the city will spend $1.6 million to retrofit existing roads.

City staff said down the road that when complete the on-street bike program would cost between $16 million and $17 million. City councilman David Brooks asked city staff about…

The End of Memorial Park Crits
by Ken        Texas Racing Life
Today was supposed to mark the start of the Memorial Park Criterium Series in Houston. I always look forward to this race series every year.  But due to the changing policies of the City of Houston, we will not get to race at the picnic loop anymore. It’s time to move on…. after one final blog entry.

The Houston cycling community constantly complains about the “dangerous” course because of the wooden post lining parts of the road and the cracks in the asphalt, when most of the crashes happen because of poor bike handling.  I believe we will not know a great thing until it is gone. Really, the course is no more dangerous than any other criterium course in Texas, with the exception of the Driveway (which is probably more dangerous…

Heating Up the Air – June 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 6, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJune 6, 2012

With summer officially arriving in about 2 weeks the temperature now seems like it arrived today. As I write this at 3:30 the home weather station reports 98.4 degrees outside. During my ride it range 87 to 95. The weather forecast shows a 30% chance of rain but the partly cloudy sky does not appear to agree. With the chance of rain increasing to 60% tomorrow I thought I should go for a little longer ride today so I visited the grass farms north of Crosby and south of Huffman. This ended up at 37.19 miles. Some of the roads do not have stores or places to get water so I took my CamelBak and with the heat and sun it came in handy. I enjoyed cold water until I got to Huffman around 25.7 miles into the ride.

The calm wind did not factor into the ride but I would have liked a little to help cool. Also this route has some long stretches without much shade, particularly when the roads split the grass farms. Along FM2100 going south I think I saw what looked like a young coyote, a victim of a car or truck. The ride went as planned without any incidents. I did stay a little longer at the Huffman Chevron enjoying the shade and light breeze.

Overall I averaged 15.5 mph with a max speed of 19.9 mph. I double checked this at Garmin Connect and it agreed. I thought I went faster than that but maybe I held a steady speed rather than a high one. 79.1 RPM was my average cadence. Mileage: 102.39 this week, 176.48 for June, 2966.86 YTD.
