About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Rain Washed The Sky a Brilliant Blue – October 13th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 13, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 13, 2011

Overnight we got .63″ of rain according to my weather station. Now the sky has been washed clean and the blue is bright color beyond description. My wife is overjoyed since this is the second rain in the last 5 days. Our yard may recover from the drought yet. Along with the clear skies was a strong north wind that was punishing as I rode into it. That accounts for the sub 15 mph average speed. Once I turned back south my speed picked a lot but not enough to overcome the first 12 miles. The temperature was perfect with 80 degrees (44% humidity) at the start and 85 (31% humidity) at the end. That wind was much stronger than the IAH weather station reported at 6 mph from the northwest because every flag I saw was standing straight out. No other bikers spotted today.

With today’s 29.38 miles my October miles are now 325.79, week to date is 115.65, and year to date is 4567.13 miles. My average speed was 14.9 mph, max speed was 23.3 mph and average cadence was 79.5 RPM.

Austin Safe Routes to School response to A2W critique
by elliott Austin on Two Wheels
Editor note: In September, I shared how my children’s school was selected for Austin’s Safe Routes to School, a program designed to encourage children to walk and bike to school and do it safely. I expressed support for this program but also offered a critique of how some of the fear inducing facts might cause parents to drive kids to school more, not less. I was also unhappy that drivers, outside of parents, are not being asked to be active participants in making our streets safer for all users. In response, the Austin Program Coordinator Kristi Stillwell sent me this letter.

We welcome the opinions and thought-provoking statements in this article, found them interesting and overall positive, and we hope to be able to partner with you Elliott (and other interested parents) on walking and biking…

by Christopher Curnutt        Biking in Dallas

I hadn’t joined the Tits Tuesday ride in ages, so last night was a good chance for me to catch up with friends I hadn’t seen in a good while, meet some new folks, and put some names to faces.  Speaking of catching up Toni Youngblood will be writing an update about her car free life (since around Feb 2010) and escapades later this…

This year’s Bike around the Bay had about a 1,000 participants riding the 150 mile, two day trek around Galveston Bay with the starting line at Fort Anahuac Park. Organizers commented that the first event had only 300 participants and now they are up to 1,000 entries. Proving the popularity and growth of the event. The bicyclists enjoy the scenic and picturesque countryside of the Southeast Texas coastal roadways with stopping points in the bay area towns along the route, starting with Anahuac, High Island, Bolivar Peninsula, …

Bike riders help raise funds for charity

The Mineola Chamber of Commerce’s second-ever Mineola Metric Century Bike Ride raised $500 for charities and grew in size, which the chamber of commerce’s Pam Franklin said was encouraging.
