About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Slightly Cooler for Today’s Ride – October 12th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 12, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 12, 2011

Wednesday was a day to ride earlier than I have this week. The temperature was slightly cooler at 75 degrees (80% humidity) for the start and 86 degrees (56% humidity). The clouds are increasing with the approach of a front. This weekend could have low temperatures in the 50’s but it’s not here yet. I am staying over the 28 mile again with today’s route 28.57 miles. Out on the route I met two other bikers: one road biker and one mountain biker. The wind was stronger at 10 mph from the SSW. I thought this would slow me down but I was able to keep the average speed at 15.4 mph and a max speed of 21.0 mph. Average cadence was 80.7 RPM in SportTracks. No two GPS programs produce the same report with RideWithGPS.com differs from SportTracks.

My bike tires are inflated to 110 psi and there are places along the route with washboard surfaces that produces a vibration. This could have caused my problem last week with the Garmin Edge 500 sensor.

October mileage status as of today: 296.41miles, year to date 4537.75 miles, this week 86.27 miles.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup for October 11th

Pedaling forerunners have already done the dangerous work of preparing SA streets for two-wheelers
By Scott Andrews        sacurrent.com
James Odom, San Antonio's solitary bicycle messenger
Last Sunday’s Síclovía, the mass ride that brought 15,000 people to bicycle, skateboard, and jog down a four-mile stretch of Broadway for four hours while autos were rerouted, was the first SA edition of the international ciclovía movement (Spanish for “bike path”), a fresh-air party celebrating fitness through human-powered transportation. In a town where more than 67 percent of residents are obese or overweight, the City-sponsored focus on exercise…

Dog-Cycling
by katiejo        Austin on Two Wheels

Riding bicycles is like trying on masks at the Spirit of Halloween Store. I have a serious case of bike lust, and to satiate my bike lust I have a semi-permanent collection of bicycles to peruse and try on to suit my daily whims. A fixie for the days when I wanna feel hip around town, a thick wheeled mountain bike when I wanna rub elbows with the dirt, a cargo bike that can transport up…

A Bike That Isn’t Mine – Seriously
The Plano Cyclist
As someone who does “bike stuff”, I’m the guy that people ask to help them fix their old bikes. I generally don’t mind doing it, as I can’t always buy new bikes just to work on them, and I love to get people back on two wheels. The only bikes I generally won’t work on are NEXT bikes from Wal-Mart. I’ve had a couple brought to me; the bolts…

A Solid Average Speed – October 11th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 11, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 11, 2011

Today was an afternoon ride. I was embroiled in a computer problem so I did not get to start earlier which was okay because the weather has moderated. The mostly cloudy skies kept the sun from getting too warm and the temperature was quite acceptable: 83 at the start (54% humidity) and 90 at the end (41% humidity). I think the hot days are behind us until next year. This was one of those rides where the wind (5mph NW) did not seem to matter. I don’t know if it was the direction I was riding or I just had good legs today. This is reflected in my good 15.5 mph average speed with a max speed of 20.5 mph. Average cadence jumped up to 83.5 RPM. The 28.73 miles flowed smoothly. October mileage status: month to date is 267.84, year to date is 4509.18. There is a cool front later this week so I may need to break out some cool gear.

Testing a new kind of hardware
James Huang, tech ed, in Boulder, CO, bikeradar.com
I’m really hoping my new hardware doesn’t create any issues at the airport! Regularly setting off metal detectors isn’t a convenient trait for someone who spends a third of the year on the road. Ugh

I’m really hoping my new hardware doesn’t create any issues at the airport! Regularly setting off metal detectors isn’t a convenient trait for someone who spends a third of the year on the road. Ugh (Boulder Medical Center )

So it turns out the attending physician at Boulder Medical Center was right about my collarbone X-ray. It wasn’t just broken, it was shattered. There were three or four separate pieces creating all sorts of havoc in there, and after my consultation with my orthopedic surgeon, Dr Robert Koch (who treated my busted hand last year), there was no doubt that I’d be getting the…

New bike lanes in Northwest Hills
by By Pam LeBlanc        Fit City

I spotted this new bike lane along Far West Boulevard, between West Rim Drive and Mesa Drive in Northwest Hills.

It’s different than a lot of lanes around Austin, because it allows cars to park along the road while still leaving the bike lanes clear.

A big problem with a lot of our existing lanes is that cars block bike traffic, and those of us on two wheels are forced to ride around them, veering in and out of motor traffic lanes. …

Working on the Chain, Gang
The Plano Cyclist

I don’t just ride bikes, I actually collect them as well. I’ll never admit it to my wife, but I am collecting; that means I have certain acquisition goals in mind, and that certain bikes are “keepers” more than others, and that upgrading is always on the table. I’m actually very close to completing my collection, at least what I consider the core part – someday I’ll do another tour of  the entire…
