About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Day After Our Rain – October 10th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 10, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 10, 2011

Saturday bike wash = Sunday rain. Is there a correlation? I wish that was the case but I think not. This rain was on good day since I was not able to ride anyway. Today the rain has moved on with some clouds remaining and a lower temperature range for the ride. Talk about about a tight temperature range: start 79 degrees (78% humidity) and finish 80 degrees (68% humidity). The clouds were scattered with a light 4 mph northwest breeze. With these lower temperatures it was pleasant riding but not perspiration free.

My Saturday flat appears to be fixed with no air lost since the fix. I noticed when I fixed the flat on Saturday how dirty my bike was so that moved me to do a thorough bike wash. I got out the work stand, removed the wheels and scrubbed every nook and cranny. I even washed each spoke individually.

As you can see from the data below today was 28.97 miles long. My average speed was 15.2 mph with the max speed at 21.6 mph. Average cadence was 80.7 RPM. October miles are now 239.11 and year to date miles are 4480.05.

CAMPO list heavy on bike, ped and transit
Ben Wear: Getting There        www.statesman.com
The people who make transportation policy for Central Texas will decide tonight how to divvy up $132 million from the Legislature and Uncle Sam.

If they go with a list of projects that has bubbled up from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization over the past few months, bike, pedestrian and transit projects will get almost 40 percent of the money. That includes almost $5 million for a bicycle bridge on MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) at Barton Creek taken from funds that, …

Serfas TL-200 Tail Light Review
by Christopher Curnutt        Biking In Dallas

So I’ve been using crappy tail and head lights for years now, I admit it.  Most of my riding is after dark, so trusting crappy lights is pretty dumb on my part.  I admit it.  Recently I’ve been trying to change my ways so I…

The Wind is Back with 27.3 mph Gusts – October 8th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 8, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 8, 2011

The sky was overcast and the temperature a mild 75 degrees. Wind was not that strong at 7 mph when I started the ride today. As I was riding on my planned route I decided to alter the route and turned west on SR 242. I have not been on this route since July 23rd. Not much has changed on the road but I did have a puncture at the 19.3 mile mark. As I was riding on the shoulder I saw this sparkling stuff on the road and then pop and my rear tire went flat in about 10 or 15 feet. This is the first flat since June 9th. The Hutchinson Fusion 2 tires have been very durable. I have one in reserve to replace the rear tire when the tread is gone. So far there are about 1800 miles on these tires.

When I turned back to the south the wind turned strong and I had to pedal hard to stay around 15 mph. The IAH weather showed the wind to only be 8 mph but a weather station in Cumberland Crossing was more realistic with 13.6 mph steady wind and 27.3 mph gusts. By now the overcast skies changed to mostly cloudy. Indian Summer was in effect and the temperature at the end was 88 degrees (57% humidity). The route ended up being 43.59 miles. In spite of the wind I did manage a 15.0 mph average speed, a max speed of 23.7 mph, and average cadence of 78.0 RPM.

October mileage recap:

  • October miles 210.14
  • This week’s miles 184.90
  • year to date miles 4451.48
