About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Late Start, Clouds Roll In, Windy – October 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 6, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 6, 2011

Today’s ride got a late start because I wasted most of the day trying get a book to publish for the Kindle. After pulling out most of my hair I gave up for the day at the advice of my wife. This was probably a wise move because the frustration was getting higher. So I left home on the ride and quickly noticed the wind had picked up from what it has been the last few days and the clouds have appeared again. The clear blue skies gave way to many clouds but the sun did made it through most of the time. For a change the temperature was cooler at the end (84 degrees, 54% humidity) than at the start (91 degrees, 43% humidity). With the wind I struggled to keep my speed up enough to get the average speed in the 15 mph range. Instead it ended up at 14.9 mph. I did manage a strong max speed of 26.7 mph with the assistance of the strong tailwind. My miles were an exact 25.0. Average cadence was 79.2 RPM.

October miles are now up to 136.65, this week is 111.41 and year to date is 4377.98. Tomorrow I will ride before I try to publish this book again.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for October 5th

How-To: Speed Vest for Night Cycling
via MAKE by Goli Mohammadi

If car users knew how fast cyclists were moving, would they be more willing to share the road? That’s the question posed by Mykle Hansen in the intro to his Speed Vest project from MAKE Volume 19.

Bicyclists receive a lot of honk-based grief from car drivers who perceive them as slow and in the way, and when drivers misjudge a bicycle’s speed, it can cause “right hook” collisions that kill several bicyclists each year. This lightweight night-cycling vest displays your current speed in glowing, 7-inch-tall numbers easily visible to cars. On the back, an Arduino…

First-Ever Bike Parking Ordinances for Houston
by Aaron Chang            bikehouston.org
City of Houston Planning Commission Subcommittee has released their recommended changes to the city’s off-street parking ordinance (Chapter 26). These include Houston’s first-ever bicycle parking ordinances.

The proposed bike parking requirements (outlined in Section XII on Page 15) would require one bike parking space for every 25,000 square feet of gross floor area (GFA). Buildings with less than 5,000 sq. ft. GFA would not be required to have bike parking. Businesses are free to have as many bike parking spaces as they want, but the proposed…

Rick Perry – Greasing The Wheels Of Injustice
by Christopher Curnutt        Biking in Dallas
Each year approximately 50 cyclists, 400 pedestrians and 500 motorcyclists are killed in Texas.  As a cyclist I can tell you that there’s a perception in this state that the drivers who are responsible for the death of people riding bicycles are seldom, if at all, actually held responsible.  In Texas if two automobiles collide, chances are someone is at fault, but if a car or truck hits a cyclist it’s just bad luck. In other words, “the sun got in my eyes”…
