About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Started Earlier with Lower Temperature and More Clouds – September 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2011 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 1, 2011

There appears to be a change in the weather pattern today. The clouds are more numerous and the temperature is a little lower and is not supposed to exceed 100 degrees today. I wanted to leave earlier and I managed to start the ride at 9:00 AM. Even though the sun was out the 81 degrees did not seem so hot and the 10 mph east wind (20 mph gusts) helped to move the warm air around. This did not stop me from sweating buckets of water though. My biking gloves were soaked when I got back home and the temperature did make it to 91 degrees.

Since this is the first of September I wanted to start the month right so I had a goal of at least 29 miles and I did ride 29.56 miles but my average speed dipped below 15 mph to 14.8 mph. I think the east wind and the gusts going across Lake Houston on FM1960 was where I lost speed and pulled the average down. The max speed was 20.4 mph and average cadence was 78.5 RPM. almost 2 RPM lower than my last ride on Tuesday.

August was a good riding month with a total of 618.15 miles over 20 riding days. That averages 30.9 miles per ride. I rode 41 hours and 18 minutes for an average speed of 15.0 mph for the whole month. After today’s ride the year to date miles are up to 4086.36.

September will not approach this level since we will be on vacation most of the month and I decided to not take my bike. Last year I took my bike and did a few rides but having a bike on a rear rack and stopping at various places along the way posed some security issues. In addition every time we needed something in the back we had to work around the rack.

BikeTexas Helps Save Bike. Ped and Trail Funds from Rescission in 2011
by emma@biketexas.org (Emma Cravey)
Zero!  Goose egg!  Nada!
Not words that Texas bike, ped and trail advocates usually like to hear -  but it was sweet music to the ears as Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) published a table of the 2011 transportation rescission impact on Transportation Enhancements (TE) and Recreational Trails Programs (RTP) in the fifty states plus the District of…

Dallas is Cool…er
by Christopher Curnutt        Biking in Dallas

Happy Days are almost here again

I went for a ride late last night and it was 98 degrees, if not for the breeze I’m not sure I would have ever made it back.  Biking in Dallas has not been much fun lately but after two months of weather in the triple digits, the next two weeks look promising.  I hear we’ll see highs in the upper 80s next week, which is like a winter blast for those…

Bike Friendly Oak Cliff
It’s almost over!

We’re slowly coming out of hibernation after this near record 60+ day of 100 degree weather. Fortunately, we have a ton of news to announce very shortly. Currently, BFOC is hard at work laying out this year’s Cyclesomatic festival. Expect the month of October to be filled with events from bike to school weeks, block parties in…

2011 Hotter’n Hell Hundred Consumer Expo and Friday Racing

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2011

I have been slow getting these pictures up. The first gallery is a combination of walking up to the MPEC building and then entering. As you enter the hallway to go to the registration area there are booths for many organizations and rides. Once you register and pickup your number packet the next stop is the consumer expo hall where the rest of the registration bag is picked up. In this hall is where most of the vendors have booths but some are outside as well. This year the number of vendors in the hall seemed to be less because there was actually enough room to walk the aisles and not feel like a sardine. There were some vendors that did not have a specific bicycling connection but they are probably attracted by the number of people who could walk by their area.

The second picture gallery is a few shots of the Friday evening racers riding around the criterium course but not racing. I got there after a race or maybe before the race was to start but I could wait too long because my wife was waiting in the Jeep. She was not feeling well and we needed to check in at our hotel.
