About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Heat Just Keeps On Coming – August 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 30, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 30, 2011

As August winds down the temperature has not followed suit. It is supposed to over 100 degrees again today but maybe tomorrow will bring a lower temperature. Today’s ride was a little late starting at 9:55 AM. I should started an hour earlier but some chores got in the way. Once I was on the road I did see one other biker at the 14.7 mile mark. Clear skies and a light 5 mph south breeze accompanied the rising temperature. It was 87 when I started and 97 when I finished. Sweat rolls off of every part of my body. Humidity remains low for our area at 42% when I finished.

At first I was not riding for an average speed of 15 or more but as I got into th ride I decided to pick up the speed and ended with an average speed of 15.1 mph (SportTracks version) or 15.2 mph (Garmin Connect version). The route was a little longer at 28.15 miles from yesterday. My max speed was 22.5 mph and the average cadence was 80.3 RPM, the same as yesterday. August miles are now 618.15 and year to date miles are 4056.80.

The Temperature Is Not Letting Up – August 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 29, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 29, 2011

We drove back from Wichita Falls yesterday and the heat stayed with us all of the way. The temperature display in our Jeep GC showed 110 degrees many times and it did drop down to around 107 when we got home. The high temperature set a record in the Houston area at 107 replacing the record 101 degrees from 1902. Today is not supposed to be much different but the high should only reached 103. When I finished today’s ride IAH airport showed 100.2 degrees and my home weather station was 98. When I left on the ride it was 84 but it did not feel that hot. I think there is a hint of fall and by the end of the end week the weather forecasters are predicting 90 degrees and maybe some rain. Humidity is almost as low as it was in Wichita Falls at 37%. Clear blue skies and a light 5 mph southeast breeze helped with the heat.

I managed to get my average speed to 15.2 mph and my max speed was 20.9 mph. Average cadence was 80.3 RPM. My muscles did not complain and were not sore from the 74 mile ride on Saturday. I think the drive back home was a day of rest. My usual weekday route was unchanged and being flatter than my Saturday route in Wichita Falls. No other bikers were out. My August miles are now 590.01 and my year to date miles are at 4028.66. Today’s ride was 27.67 miles.
