About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Offline in Tuscaloosa, AL

Texbiker.net Posted on August 14, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 14, 2011

I have been not able to update Texbiker.net since last Monday (8/8/2011) because I was on a church mission trip at Tuscaloosa. During the day we worked on two Habitat for Humanity homes in the Holt section of Tuscaloosa. At night we stayed at Camp Coker in Coker, AL about 15 miles northwest of Tuscaloosa. Unfortunately the camp had marginal cell phone service and no internet so I was not able to keep up with much of anything other than what my cell phone downloaded while I was working. I am back online now and over the next couple of days I will try to catch up.

The pictures below show the area and where we stayed.

Camp Coker - Where we stayed at night

The building we stayed in at Camp Coker. Note the metal siding. No cell phone signal.

Habitat for Humanity worksite and some damaged homes in the background.

Habitat home we worked on. There was a small and large one. This is the small one. They hope to move in by 9/1/2011.

Habitat home number two. No date set that I know of.

We passed this home each day on the way to the worksites.

Bicycle bypass OK’d
By Christopher Smith Gonzalez   Galveston County The Daily News
LEAGUE CITY — While the initial FM 518 bypass project to alleviate traffic might have hit a snag, one component of that plan, a shared-use bikeway project has gotten a green light.

Council members approved the $4.1 million, 2.3-mile long, shared-use path known as the FM 518 Bypass Bikeway.

The city was nominated by the Texas Department of Transportation to participate in the Transportation Enhancement Program, a federally funded program, in July of last…

Mark (The Medicine Man) Hayes, is a handy chap to have on a ride, as seen here patching up Randall’s broken collar bone on a recent Tweener ride. The PBA is thankful for Mark’s dedication and skill. Now Mark, what can you do about that broken frame?

7 in a Row and 220 miles – August 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2011

Today’s ride wrapped up 7 in a row. I have not done this in many years. One thing I don’t believe I have ever done is to ride over 200 miles in a week. This week I rode 220.45 miles which is amazing especially given the hot weather we have been suffering through. For today’s ride it was 92 degrees when I left home and 97 degrees when I returned. While I was riding I noticed I was drenched in perspiration and I think the combination of 41% humidity and dry breeze. The clouds were more numerous than yesterday and when the sun ducked behind one the temperature felt lower. The ride today was 24.61 miles with an average speed of 14.9 mph, max speed was 21.2 mph and average cadence was 79.0 RPM. August miles are now 220.45 and year to date miles are 3659.10. As I mentioned yesterday I will not be able to ride again until at least August 14th. So my miles for the month will slow down dramatically.
