About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Clear skies and the heat is still here – August 17th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 17, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 17, 2011

Clear skies greeted me for today’s ride and the temperature was 82 degrees at the start time. During the ride the temperature increased to 92 degrees which is no surprise. With the wind at 5.8mph from the southwest it looks like another 100+ degree day in Houston. No rain is in sight and the City of Houston has initiated mandatory water usage rules. I did not ride around Lake Houston on this ride but the lake level should start to increase in the coming day or so as Lake Conroe has begun releasing water at the instructions of the City of Houston which has control of the water in Lake Conroe.

Today’s ride was on a different route from my last two and I was able to increase my average speed to 14.6 mph and the max speed to 21.4 mph. My average cadence also increased to 78.2 RPM. The distance was 25.01 miles. August miles are now 293.69, year to date miles are 3732.34, and the week total is 73.24.

RETUL and Spinscan fit from Shama
by Ken     Texas Racing Life

Memorial Park Crit #10 2011
by Ken     Texas Racing Life
Weather at the crit was exactly how everyone expected it to be: extermely hot.  With a heat index over 100, only 33 brave souls made it out to race the P123 criterium.

Team Shama had 3 in the race, and the plan was for me to be aggressive and set Jon up for a sprint if it came to that.  Bill did the 3/4 race right before, and would help when he could (he rode amazing for just getting done with a crit right before).  From the beginning, the…

Heat and Dry Continues – August 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 16, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 16, 2011

The record heat continues in southeast Texas and the rain will not show up either except in very spotty locations. Yesterday afternoon my home weather station was showing 103 degrees. I was planning on increasing my average speed today but it actually decreased by .1 mph to 14.2 mph. The same was true of my max speed which was 20.7 mph today. Even starting in the morning at 9:39 does not avoid the heat. It was 83 degrees when I started and 93 when I finished. What I don’t know is how fast it got to the 93 level. Average cadence dropped to 75.6 RPM from yesterday’s 76.2 RPM. I did ride slightly farther at 24.39 miles. My body is starting to return to biking form away from the carpenter activities from last week. I will try to start earlier tomorrow and get the average speed up to 15 mph. August miles are 268.68 and year to date miles are 3707.33.
