About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The heat is not letting up – June 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJune 30, 2011

The heat is not letting up. When I left on the ride the temperature on my home weather station was 101 degrees and my Garmin Edge shows a 102.2 max temperature during the ride. When I finished the temperature was 95 degrees. Humidity was in the 33 to 38% range. There still is no break in the rain blockage. My yard is getting browner by the day. My Camelbak Podium Chill is not keeping ice for the whole ride. When I stopped at the Chevron station in Huffman (17 mile point) I refilled my water bottle with ice but it was gone by the time I got to the 21 mile point. This has got to be good training for the HH100 in August. The skies were clear and the wind was 13.8 mph from the southeast.

Three other riders were out on Old Atascocita Road. I was rode 29.46 miles which got June mileage up to 661.37. This is not bad and is just a little less than May. The extra daylight helps. Today’s average speed was 15.0 mph and the max speed was 21.5 mph. Average cadence was 79.8 RPM. All of these June miles took 44 hours 15 minutes in the saddle. Year to date miles are now 2839.09. I rode 21 days during June.

June riding recap:

Count:    21 Activities
Distance:    661.36 mi
Time:    43:27:50 h:m:s
Elevation Gain:    3,923 ft
Avg Speed:    15.0 mph
Avg Bike Cadence:    80 rpm
Max Bike Cadence:    234 rpm
Calories:    36,217 C
Max Speed:    25.9 mph
Avg Time:    02:10:23 h:m:s
Avg Distance:    32.52 mi
Max Avg Bike Cadence:    82 rpm

Is it too hot to Ride? Nay! – June 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2011

Earlier this week a town in north Texas between Wichita Falls and Amarillo set record temperature of 117 degrees. I was telling my wife about it and she asked me if it was that hot when we go to the Hotter’n Hell Hundred in late August would I ride. I have ridden there when it was approaching 110 degrees but I was much younger than I am now so I am not sure if I would brave that temperature and ride 75 miles. Maybe by then the hot temperature and lack of rain will be a thing of the past.

It wasn’t in the past for this evening’s ride with 97 degrees at the start and 91 degrees at the finish. To help with the convection oven feeling the wind was 13 mph with 21 mph gusts at the start and then a steady 15 mph at the end. During the day I saw the heat index at 104 and 105. This has got to be good training for the HHH in Wichita Falls.

With the month winding down I am riding to hit the 650 mile mark for June. After today’s ride I am at 631.91. I rode 27.70 miles today at an average speed of 14.9 mph and average cadence of 78.3 RPM. Year to date I rode 2809.63 miles. I saw 2 other bikers at Old Atascocita Road and FM2100.
