About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Local Cyclist Heading to Senior Nationals; Intends to Race Until 90 Years-Old
by Jason Notoras    www.kristv.com

Most adults cringe at the thought of growing another year older. While many go the extra mile to hide their age, one local athlete says he actually looks forward to his twilight years.

“Once you get to be 45 or 50 years old, you’re not over the hill. You’ve got lots of things to do,” said Tom Neagli. …

Memorial Park Crit #3 2011
by Ken    Texas Racing Life
Because of a nasty crash last week, the P/1/2/3 race was cancelled.  This week would be the second open race of the season.

Through this week, I have bee trying to work on sprinting and anaerobic intervals, so I rode to the crit, doing 4  300 meter sprints in the 98 degree F weather.  When I arrived at Memorial Park, I was worried that I might have overworked myself for the crit.  Regardless, the goal for me was to be as aggressive as possible, and then if I couldn’t get into a break, I would make sure my teammate Jon had a good spot going into the…

June 19 th Trail Work @ Walnut Creek 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Austin Ridge Riders
Sunday, June 19, 2011 – 16:00
More joy for all you sweat hogs!  Work day this Sunday at Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, June 19th, from 4-7 pm, then eat. Selective trimming and lopping, with a focus on areas of the trail with heavily vegetated turns that obscure on-coming traffic.  Selective thinning will allow trail users to know to see who is on the other side!

Man’s best friends
www.peopleforbikes.org

While it has traditionally been posed that the dog is man’s best friend, we know many of you also reserve that honor for your two-wheeled companion—your bicycle. Like a good dog, a good bicycle is quiet, a provider of comfort during rough times, and easy on your carpet. But for those who have both a special canine and a special bicycle in their life, a common dilemma is how to give both of them attention at the same time. We’ve experimented with this extensively at…

Houston, Texas works on bike friendliness
By Peter Suciu from Detroit, Michigan
Houston, Texas is the largest city in a state known for big things — the city ranks fourth largest in the US after New York, Los Angeles and Chicago — and as with many cities its growth occurred without much consideration for bicycles, as a result Houston has…

I decided to wear a long sleeve jersey – June 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2011

I decided to wear a long sleeve jersey for today’s ride after reading Dr. Gabe Mirkin‘s latest newsletter. The newsletter was about preventing skin cancer. In one section he wrote about clothing being better than sun screen. This week the FDA announced new standards for sun screen products so this might have influenced Dr. Mirkin’s newsletter. In the newsletter he wrote: “…In one study, participants completed questionnaires on the frequency with which they used sun screens, wore a hat or long sleeves, or stayed in the shade, in comparison to their number of sunburns in the past year.  Although using sun screens is the most common sun protective behavior, use of sun screens does not reduce risk for sunburns.   Those who avoid the sun by seeking shade or wearing long sleeves are far less likely to suffer sunburns (Cancer Causes and Control, June 2011).  Wear a hat that covers your ears, a shirt, and arm coolers on your arms when you exercise outdoors. …”. I have never wore a long sleeve jersey when the temperature was as warm (95 degrees when I started) as it was this evening so I was not sure how this would affect my cooling but I did not notice any problem and avoided using the very hard to wash off sun screen I normally use. Now I do not know if I will do this on a regular basis but I will think about it.

The wind was a solid 14 mph from the SSE with gusts to 25 mph. During the ride headed west over Lake Houston the wind was almost a direct headwind and the pedaling was very slow at time when one of those 25 mph gusts came along. Partly cloudy skies and 51% humidity kept the ride bearable even with the long sleeve jersey. I did see one other biker. The three days are supposed to be extremely warm at 99 or above and the humidity level will push the heat index to 104 or above. I plan on starting early on Saturday and Sunday.

My average speed dropped to 15.1 mph but the max was at 25.7 mph over the 28.54 miles. The average cadence was 79.7 rpm which lower than I like. For June I am up to 372.95 miles and the year to date miles are 2550.66. The week is now at 86.05 miles.
