About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston Grand Crit 2011: Feeling Flat
by Ken  texasracinglife.com
I have to admit that I am not training as hard as what I thought I would be at this point in the season.  I should be doing high intensity preparing for all the summer crits, but I am feeling a little flat.  It’s not that I don’t want to ride or that I am feeeling overly fatigued. These are the tell-tale signs of burn out, and I have felt them before.  This is different.  This is trying to…

The dog wanted to chase me badly – June 13th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 13, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJune 13, 2011

The summer heat is here a little early. It was 95 degrees at the start of my ride and it was 89 at the finish. The 16 mph wind helped to spread the heat around and the low humidity (28%) helped as well. Clear skies and a 8:22PM sunset offset my late 6:32 PM start. I keep hoping the school traffic would disappear and speed my evening drive home but it has not happened yet.

An exciting moment happened around the 21.4 mile mark when I rode past a woman with a dog in the front yard. The dog wanted to chase me badly but the leash and the woman’s arm stopped his pursuit abruptly. My legs had recovered from yesterday’s early ride and I was able to keep a steady pace during the ride. I also managed to not pick up any wire in my tires.

One other biker was out and our path crossed on Old Atascocita Road. Tomorrow will be a rest day. I rode 28.88 miles today at 15.3 mph average speed and a max speed of 23.9 mph. Average cadence was 81.2 rpm. June miles are up to 315.78 and the year to date miles are 2493.49.

July 10 -  1st Annual Fort Worth Fat Tire Festival (Gateway Park)
Fort Worth Mountain Bike Association
July 10th, 2011, 8am-2pm FWMBA and Lanny’s Alta Cocina will be hosting the first annual Fort Worth Fat Tire Festival at Gateway Park. This is an event for the whole family and is a fund raiser benefiting the FWMBA. FWMBA works closely with the city of Ft. Worth, Streams and Valleys, and the Trinity River Visions group in order to bring mountain bike trails to our city. FWMBA has logged MORE volunteer man hours of labor than ANY OTHER club or association in Ft. Worth. This Fall, FWMBA will break ground at Gateway park to bring an additional 5 miles of new trails that will provide over 250 ft. of elevation gain. With your help, we will be able to increase our club membership numbers, volunteer numbers, and be able to buy all the tools required to undertake this massive trail building project! SO, come out and join us for this super fun Mountain Bikers’ party and help make a difference!!! …

Collin Classic PBA Rest Stop (More pictures)

Sign seen at the rest stop: “Howdy, welcome to Climax; now git!”  And they did, all the way to the finish! …

For the real cost of one mile of bike lane, 13,000 cyclists could be educated to make it redundant.
from Cycle Smart Dallas

Create your own bike lanes… anywhere you want.
Of course, they’re going to be about 11 feet wide. Is that a problem?

Crows are early risers – June 12th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 12, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJune 12, 2011

Crows are early risers. As I started my ride this morning my progress was relayed from crow group to crow group. I do not notice these in the evening when I ride but they could be drowned out by the general noise. Another observation is that lawn sprinklers can start at any moment and they don’t always spray just the yard. While this could be cooling in the evening the morning temperature is not in the 90’s. In fact today the 74 degree temperature held from start to finish. Wind was calm and the clear sky enabled the sun to broadcast a beautiful sunrise. Humidity was a heavy 81%. I did not start quite as early as I planned because the daylight was slow getting up but I was only 9 minutes later. I saw numerous people out walking their dogs and some early joggers but no bikers.

With the early ride I can now enjoy the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour of Switzerland on Versus this afternoon when I get home from a church meeting. Hopefully my wife does not get bike race overload.

Today’s 24.68 miles puts the week total at 165.35 miles, June miles are now 286.90 and the year to date miles at 2464.61. The average speed was 15.4 mph with a max speed of 24.4 mph. Average cadence was 81.9 rpm.
