About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Today’s ride doubled the number… – February 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 6, 2011 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 6, 2011

Today’s ride doubled the number of miles I have ridden so far this month. The weather warmed up to 71 degrees when I finished the ride at 1:30. A firm 3.1 mph SW breeze with partly cloudy skies added to the ride’s pleasure. I bundled up thinking the wind and clouds would be chilly but I think I could have rode with less coverings. The double long sleeve jerseys and windbreaker were fine but I had sweated a good amount when I got home. The leg warmers were comfortable but I could have made it without them as well. I almost did not wear the full finger gloves but I did. At time when the clouds covered the sun the extra clothing was appreciated. I think this might be the first day in February the temperature has made it to 70. I would like to think there would be more like this but the weatherman says more cold weather later this week. I would like to ride in the Pedaling the Prairie next Saturday in Katy but this will be decided when the weather gets firm.

  • February miles 50.78
  • YTD miles 268.77

I was not expecting to ride today but… – February 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 5, 2011 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 5, 2011

I was not expecting to ride today but the 30 degree temperature increase and clear blue skies called for a ride. After the ice yesterday and the weather forecast for today I did not think a ride was in the works. The ice melted quickly this morning and the sun came out. By 2:00 the temperature was 60.3 degrees on my weather station so the mountain bike came out and I hit the trails and streets in Kingwood. I decided to ride on some trails that I have not been on for sometime. Some of the route had to be altered due to street construction but I still managed to cover some forgotten trails. The trails are usually heavily wooded but in the winter the leaves are thinner so you can see more from the trails than in the summer. Several joggers, dog walkers and other riders were out on the trails as well. While the elevation changes are not big cranking the Motobcane 700HT MTB up some of the inclines requires extra effort. The road bike is much lighter. I could get to ride tomorrow if the weather holds to the forecast of 65 degrees and partly cloudy. The weather this winter is putting a severe crimp in my mileage though.

  • February miles: 25.23

Snow Snap
The powder made the roads easier to bike today, especially with 2.5? wide knobby tires at 15psi.  The most treacherous part was avoiding cars spinning out of control.
