About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What’s Turning the Bike Spokes on the Net January 1st

2010 recap
from Bike Denton by bikedenton
2010 was a transformational year for biking in Denton. I’m a little sad that almost half of the popular stories are about accidents and assaults, but those stories serve a good purpose. Looking forward to 2011, we expect some big news…

Ft Worth – Panther City closes, Trinity grows

Panther City
Today is the last day Panther City bikes will be open, ever. After 6 years, they’re closing. Cheers guys. It was definitely one of the cozier bike shops I’ve visited. There were couches, a keg of Rahr beer, Masi and Indy Fab bikes, and a great location next to the Spiral Diner. What a nice final…

Splotchy rain and wet roads – December 31st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 31, 2010 by Rick AnkrumDecember 31, 2010

Splotchy rain and wet roads were the conditions for the final ride of 2010. When I started the ride the clouds thick and low but the roads were only damp but within a couple of miles I ran into light rain. It was not long though before the rain stopped so I figured this would be a splotchy rain type of ride. And so it was with period of light rain and wet roads. This is not my favorite riding conditions but the temperature was 68 degrees and it was the last day of the year. Needless to say I did not see any other riders.

I did not really need the windbreaker jacket for the temperature but it was best for the light rain. The long sleeve jersey was appreciated as well. I did get to try out my new L. Garneau leg warmers. These do not have the ankle zippers like my old ones but the fit was just right. I also have a new waterbottle cage on my Motobecane Le Champion. Combined with the Camelbak Podium Chill bottle and it was just right. The water was cold until the end of the ride but the temperature was not that hot either.

The final mileage for 2010:

  • December miles 228.85
  • 2010 Total miles 5162.17 (2009 miles = 5225.74)

We’d Like To Address A Small Gap In The Central Trail Plan

We are very fortunate to have such an aggressive Bike and Pedestrian Plan in Richardson. The city planners are doing a great job retrofitting some new trails and bike lanes into an older, built-out infrastructure.

…Jeep Wrangler with a bike carrier… – December 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 30, 2010 by Rick AnkrumDecember 30, 2010

Today was finally warm enough and somewhat dry enough to go riding. I got off work early today and as I was driving home I caught with another Jeep Wrangler with a bike carrier on the back. On the carrier were two Cannondale mountain bikes. They appeared to be identical dual suspension models. I wondered if the driver was coming back from riding or going to somewhere to ride. This inspired me to ride when I got home but as I got closer to home there were rain drops on the windshield. The clouds were kinda heavy but I figured the rain could go away so I waited about an hour and then left for the ride. No rain drops during the ride. That was great! Temperature was 70 degrees when I started and 68 when I finished. Wind was 14 mph from the SSE.

With an early start I was able to ride in the daylight for about 40 minutes. This was nice since I have not been able to ride since December 22nd. Tomorrow’s weather should be good enough for a ride. Then in the evening another cold front moves in. Maybe tomorrow’s ride will be on my road bike. Today’s ride was on the Motobecane 700HT MTB. I did have a problem when I finished the ride and dismounted: my hamstring muscle area was very sore. I must have been sitting on the saddle in a wrong position. It is getting better as I stretch it.

Ride data for the month and year:

  • December miles 203.60 (I wasn’t sure I was going to break 200)
  • YTD miles 5136.92 (It looks like I will not make it to 5200)
