About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Jamie Schanbaum, who lost limbs to meningococcal septicemia, learns to ride …
by Austin 360
The 22-year-old college student swings a leg over the bike, sliding first one, then the other prosthetic foot into plastic cages that hold her feet on the pedals. As the tires start rolling, Ahmadi runs alongside her, like a parent balancing a child just learning to ride. Then he dashes back to his own bike, jumps aboard and races after her.
Jamie Schanbaum
Schanbaum used to ride her bike everywhere. Then, in November 2008, when she was a sophomore at the University of Texas, she caught meningococcal septicemia, a life-threatening…

The Long Road Back
by merriemarie
We were there to participate in the Texas Challenge, a six-day, 350-mile bike ride from San Antonio to suburban Dallas, sponsored by Ride 2 Recovery, a nonprofit group that uses cycling to help wounded warriors with their rehabilitation. Fleming had been planning to make the journey on a hand-cycle…But three days before the ride was to begin, Fleming met John Wordin, the accomplished former …

BikeTexas Awards Bike Friendliest Texas Legislator
from www.abc-of-mountainbiking.com
Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) is a longtime supporter of cycling in Texas. An avid cyclist, Senator Ellis has authored many cycling-related bills, including the Safe Passing Bill in the 2009 legislative session. The Safe Passing Bill, Senate Bill 488, required motorists to give more than three feet of clearance when passing any “vulnerable road user”, including cyclists. SB 488 passed the House and Senate…

1st Ever Mellow Johnnys 6hr Mountain Bike Race
by pwiddy
Today I did the Mellow Johnnys 6hr mountain bike race in Dripping Springs, TX at Lance’s Ranch, or should I say Juan Pelota’s ranch. This year was the first year that they did it and I will have to say that they did an amazing job organizing it! There were ride marshals out there riding the course, helping people, lots of sponsors, Nuun had their drink, and of course Michelobe was out there. Everything was very…

Ice Delays Recovery from Injuries
Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine
November 14, 2010
More than 30 years ago I coined the term RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for the acute treatment of athletic injuries.  Now a study from the Cleveland Clinic shows that one of these recommendations, applying ice to reduce swelling, actually delays healing by preventing the body from releasing IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1), a hormone that helps…

Cycling – Two days, two nice rides, 65.92 miles!
by donbynum
I have been working on building-up my endurance so that I can do a 100 mile ride by year-end.  Yesterday and today I proved that I am getting there.  Wednesday, John Chalmers and I rode 45.24 miles from Lake Buchanan to the Llano courthouse square and back with a detour down to Shaw Island.  Then late this afternoon Gil Jones, David Nantz and I rode 20.68 miles out and back on…

November 12th Bike Ride – Beat the Chill and Maybe Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on November 12, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 12, 2010

When I got home from work this evening the warm temperature and overcast sky beckoned to ride. With tomorrow’s weather not looking too good I needed to get at least a few miles in this week or my legs would forget how to turn the pedals. Earlier in the week I pumped up the Hutchinson Basic Acrobat tires on my Raleigh M800 mountain bike to about 60 psi. The last ride I noticed they were not quite as firm as I like them to be. Since my route is almost 100% concrete and asphalt the Hutchinson tires without any knobs in the center are what I consider the best tire for this type of pavement short of a slick tire. The tire noise is almost nothing but this does expose me to an easier flat threat. Generally though flats have been few and far between. Since I don’t put that many miles on the Raleigh M800 the tires last 2 to 3 years.

The skies were overcast but the temperature was 72 degrees. A southeast 9 mph breeze was what caused me to wear a long sleeve jersey though, but only one jersey. Tomorrow this outfit will not be enough.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 120.43
  • YTD miles 4723.40

11-12-2010 Ride Information and Map

Additional charts, weather and map.
