About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup November 8th – Texas Bicycling

Review: LiveRider turns your iPhone into a cycling computer
from Ars Technica by eric@arstechnica.com (Eric Bangeman)

LiveRider
I’ve become a bicycling addict. Since realizing in July 2009 that bicycling is a fantastic way to get rid of the excess weight I’ve been lugging around, I’ve ridden more than I ever thought possible—always with my iPhone mounted to the handlebars. Using MotionX-GPS, I tracked every ride…

We need real bike paths for real bike transportation
by Grist Magazine
…The Katy Trail is not a trail in the woods, but a multi-use path, or, in planning-speak, a “MUP.” These paved byways are varyingly called trails, paths, rail trails, bike trails, or linear parks. The mix of terminology reflects the current confusion about what exactly they are for.

The original concept is that of the linear park — a destination in the city or suburbs where locals of all ages can go get fresh air and exercise in a natural setting. Mellow recreation…

Texas Tech Cycling: Saturday Course Scouting Ride
from www.texastechcycling.org
This Saturday for our normal 9:00 a.m. ride, Kyle will take the team out to the Ransom Canyon area where we will scout prospective routes for the Road Race portion of the Omnium in 2011.

Since Horseshoe is closed and looks to be so for the foreseeable future, our only choice is to find a new route that will challenge and defeat…

Hoffman: No need for expensive bikes in the MS 150
from HoustonChronicle.com — Ken Hoffman
Real bicycle people (you know, the Spandex crowd) hate when I say this, but you don’t need an expensive bike, nor do you have to be in supreme physical condition to complete the MS150. …

Today is a light news day. As the organized bike rides taper off and the weather gets cooler people move inside or stop riding until spring. I know it will not be long to when I get my windtrainer out of the closet for the temperatures below 60 degrees and I wimp out on the outside ride.

The Thermometer Can Fool You – November 7th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 7, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 7, 2010

I got a later start on today’s bike ride than normal for a Sunday. I had a meeting at church which caused the delay but I thought it would give the temperature a chance to warm up some from the 11:30 time I usually start. With the change to standard time this morning it moved the time to even later. When I got home I looked at my weather station and the temperature was 77 degrees. By the time I got dressed to leave on the ride (about 10 minutes) the temperature had lowered to 74 degrees but there was plenty of sunshine with the clear blue skies and a very light breeze of 5 mph from the southeast. I thought this would be warm and did not really dress too heavily. I wore a light long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve one over the top. No leg warmers and half finger gloves. When I first started the ride I was chilly when I was in the shade but I thought I would warm up as the ride progressed. I did get somewhat warmer but with the earlier shadows it was tough to stay in the sunshine. So I was chilly the whole ride even though when I got back the temperature was 70 degrees. It didn’t help that I loaded the water bottle with a lot of ice. It was still ice cold when I got home.

According to the weather forecast we should be back in the 80’s by the end of the week. I will hold them to this. I already miss CDT.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 102.26
  • YTD miles 4705.23

11-7-2010 Ride data and map

Additional charts, weather and map.
