About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Savannah and Garden City, GA – September 6th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 6, 2010 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 6, 2010

Not riding in Texas for now; I moved on from Mobile, AL to Savannah and Garden City, GA. I have never been to these cities so riding was dependent on what I could learn from Google maps. The area has a number of bike lanes and I rode mostly on them. The bike lanes are marked clearly but it is strange to be riding along and  the bike lane ends abruptly with no directions to turn off or turn around. And then further ahead the lane starts up again. This explains what I was seeing on Google maps with the bicycling information highlighted. The route was fairly flat unlike the one in Mobile.

Even though I used Google maps I still managed to get lost a couple of times. It was not so bad that I could not get back on course once I realized I was not going where I planned. I will get another chance on tomorrow morning’s ride. I did see another rider though.

After the bike ride we went to the historic Savannah downtown district for a trolley car tour. Very interesting city with tons of history. I would recommend using the Old Savannah Tours trolley ride and ask for the driver Chris. Labor Day was busy but not too bad.

Some ride statistics:

  • miles 25.64
  • riding time 1:42:03
  • average speed 15.0 mph
  • max speed 24.0 mph
  • average cadence 84 rpm
  • max cadence 104 rpm
  • elevation gain 237 ft., elevation loss 186 ft., max elevation 47 ft., min elevation -37 ft.
  • September miles 90.89

Absolutely gorgeous day for riding. It was only 75F when the ride began and the humidity was relatively low. It made me question where I was for a minute there. It didn’t even look like it was that windy; in fact, I didn’t believe the Weather Channel app when it told me wind was north at 7. That disbelief quickly changed once I started riding, though. Yep, there was wind. Damn the Weather Channel for being right! …

Mobile, AL – September 4th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 4, 2010 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 4, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/47585831 465 548]

I am not riding in Texas today. While I travel with my bike I got out early this morning in the northwest community in Mobile, AL. I have never been to this city so I was not sure what I was going to find on my bike ride as far as traffic and road. First off I checked Google maps to layout a route. It was supposed to be a simple route: Moffett Road (US 98) north to county road 31 and then to highway 217 and northwest turning south on county road 27. From there I would take Moffett  Road south to the hotel.

Best laid plans sometimes do not happen. I took the wrong direction out of the hotel parking lot and went south on Moffett Road. Part of the reason is that I arrived at the hotel in the dark and did not get oriented correctly with the surroundings. As it turned out the traffic was light and the roads were smooth but not flat. I did not realize until later today that I had ridden almost all the way to downtown Mobile. The weather was pleasant with 78 degrees, clear skies, wind NNE at 11 mph and gusts to 14 mph. Humidity was 59%, light for a coastal city like Mobile.

Because I am traveling I do not have access to the SportsTrack program on my home computer so I have improvised on the charts and map shots.

If you are ever in Mobile I strongly recommend visiting the Bellingrath Gardens and Home.

Some ride statistics:

  • miles 20.47
  • riding time 1:18:59
  • average speed 15.4 mph
  • max speed 27.7 mph
  • elevation gain 463 ft. elevation loss 477 ft.
  • max elevation 236 ft., min. elevation 29 ft.
  • September miles about 66
