About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

August 18th Bike Ride – Overcast and Hot

Texbiker.net Posted on August 18, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 18, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/45144260 465 548]

After two days of not riding this evening I was back on the road. During the day I noticed the heat index was at 108 but towards the evening the sky became overcast and the temperature lowered a few degrees. Wind was not really a factor except when I was headed west over Lake Houston on the McKay Causeway. Out on the causeway there is nothing to block the wind except for the traffic going with me and there are big gaps most of the time. I had to drop down a gear to keep my speed around 15 mph. Once I was off the causeway the wind was more of a tailwind than a headwind. I did not see any other riders this evening. The sun is starting to set earlier and when the clouds are overcast I am pressed to get 23 miles in before darkness.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 23.16
  • riding time 1:34:51
  • average pace 4:06 min/mile
  • average speed 14.6 mph
  • max speed 21.4 mph
  • average cadence 77.8 rpm
  • max cadence 110 rpm
  • climb 181 ft., descend 196 ft., max elevation 104 ft.
  • August miles 301.39
  • YTD miles 3409.86

Flat-landers conquering the Hill Country
Posted on 08/14/2010 by Gil Jones
The morning haze from the constant humidity and warm mornings was just breaking as we got underway from Llano. With a mere 44 miles on the Peugeot, 17 of it just yesterday, three “Boys from Big Spring” and three friends set off to Castell, the little hideaway on the Llano River. With the promise of 18.1 miles of hilly fun ahead, I had loaded the water bottle with Elete electrolyte drops and the Osprey Raptor 14 with about 1.5 liters of water. Serious, experienced riders…

Downtown parking: are we done yet?
from Bike Denton by bikedenton
I just read DRC’s article from last weekend about the downtown parking woes.  Developers want the city to build more parking, or they say the area could face financial doom.

–If a plan isn’t implemented soon, business owners say, the lack of parking would likely stunt the budding entertainment district along Industrial and East Hickory.

–If downtown tenants don’t succeed, the value of real estate in the entertainment district could plummet, said Greg Johnson, executive vice president of Verus Real Estate Advisors, which owns several buildings off East Hickory Street. …
