About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

C y c l e * D a l l a s: Reed Bates found Guilty of ‘Reckless Driving’
by PM Summer
Reed Bates (AKA ChipSeal) has been found guilty in Ellis County Court No. 2 on a charge of reckless driving for not riding as far right as possible (as stated by the prosecutor instead of the word ‘practicable’) in a 12′ lane with 70 mph tractor-trailer trucks, and for not riding on an inconsistent, broken, and even nonexistent shoulder when directed to ride there by local law enforcement officers, contrary to the requirements of Sec. 551.103  of the Texas Transportation Code. Oddly, the fact that other vehicles were being allowed to exceed the posted speed limit was considered a reason to force a lawfully operating vehicle off the roadway. …

It’s a lot more than just pedaling
by Dallas Voice
In March of 2008, a friend asked me to join her in riding Tour Dallas, a 30-mile bike rally in and around the Dallas area.

It was my first time on a bike since I owned a pristine pink Huffy as a child, and I was more than just a little intimidated that chilly morning as we headed out of the AAC parking lot with thousands of other riders.

Crazy, maybe, but I convinced myself that riding a bike was just like … well, riding a bike. …

August 19th Bike Ride – Go Easy on the Sprinkles

Texbiker.net Posted on August 19, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 19, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/45274321 465 548]

As I was leaving home for the evening ride I felt a few light sprinkles of rain. Before I left I was looking at the weather radar and could see some rain clouds on the far east of Harris County but I was not sure which direction they go. The rule is if it is not raining I go riding. So off I went. For the first 5 miles or so I would feel a few sprinkles of rain every so often but after that they went away. On the way back home the clouds broke on the western horizon and the orange sun came through. It was pretty. The temperature was 88 degrees when I got home. The wind was 6 mph from the south.

On the ride home I followed a fellow biker onto my street until he turned off. I did not get close enough to say anything. He was wearing a Indiana University jersey.

My goal was to get at least 46 miles before Saturday’s ride to position me to total over 125 miles for the week. I will try to ride 56 to 60 miles on Saturday and then 25 on Sunday.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 23.16
  • riding time 1:35:09
  • average pace 4:06 min/mile
  • average speed 14.6 mph
  • max speed 21.0 mph
  • average cadence 77.2 rpm
  • max cadence 106 rpm
  • climb 175 ft., descend 145 ft., max elevation 103 ft.
  • August miles 324.56
  • YTD miles 3433.03

Google Bike Maps Adds Lanes, Trails for 80 Cities
via ReadWriteWeb by Mike Melanson on 8/18/10
Earlier this year, Google added bicycle paths and directions to Google Maps, a feature users had been requesting  for some time. The feature launched in beta, with bike lane and trail information for 150 cities, but the Google Maps team knew even then that it was far from complete.

Now, Google is saying that the “effort to improve our bike maps has surpassed our happiest expectations”, with tens of thousands of suggestions from users across the country.

2010 Texas State Time Trial Championships
from Mike’s Bike Blog
Jack and me headed down to Floresville, TX to partake in the 2010 edition of the Texas State Individual Time Trial (ITT) Championships. This was both of our first times to compete at this event. Jack was in the 10-12 year old division and I was signed up for the 35+ 4/5.

Jack was scheduled to roll out around 7am, so we had an early wake up call. We actually drove down to Spring Branch and stayed with a Cousin Angie so we only had an hour drive to Floresville from there.  For Jack his goal was to ride the 6 mile course and average 17 miles an hour. …
