About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike shop caters to commuter-cyclist
by Fort Worth Business Press
It’s one thing to go out and ride a bicycle 10 or 15 miles (or more) in the Texas heat for recreation, with the promise of a cold shower and relaxing drink afterward, but it’s another to do the same and then be presentable enough for work.

For the commuter cyclist, there are plenty of obstacles. Finding routes that are bike-friendly can be a challenge, and sometimes it can take significantly more time to get to work on a bike rather than in a car. …

Cycling: Bike polo grows locally
12:04 AM CDT on Sunday, August 15, 2010
By Todd Jorgenson / Sports Editor Denton Record-Chronicle
Bicycle polo probably won’t show up on national television or receive widespread media attention anytime soon, but Nathaniel Lightfoot still wants to see the sport grow.

Lightfoot is the founder of North Texas Bike Polo, a group that gathers informally twice a week at Denia Park for pickup games in a grassroots sport that combines cycling and polo, with a couple of hockey twists thrown in. …

Bicycling Author Shares Experiences: TEXAS STATE TIME TRIAL …
by Jerry Dusterhoff
I participate in two sets of TT championships: USAC and Senior Games. The USAC distance is 20k, and Senior Games have 10k and 5k distances. Today the USAC championships were held in Floresville, Tx. Once again, I managed to put together a sterling performance, good enough to garner a silver medal. Since I was 50 seconds behind first place, there are no recriminations as to what I could have done to shave time. …

August 15th Bike Ride – Little Puffs of Cotton

Texbiker.net Posted on August 15, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 15, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/44672603 465 548]

In the bright blue sky were these little puffs of cotton while I was riding this morning. I was able to leave a little earlier than normal on Sunday so the heat had not got to the level it normally would be, but it was close. Today has the possibility of being the first 100 degree day (officially at least) of the year. The Houston Chronicle ran a story a day or so ago lamenting the fact that over the last several decades the number of days over 100 degrees has increased from when it was a rarity. While it does get hot in Texas I sometimes have to wonder about statistics used in this manner when they choose the arbitrary decades our calendar system uses. Form my memory I have the year 1980 in mind when starting in early July we went for 2 or 3 weeks with every day being 100 or more. Having grown up where winter was sometimes severe I have no problem with the heat and warm. I will take heat or cold any day.

Today’s ride was enjoyable in my opinion with a little breeze (4 mph NW) with low humidity which meant the perspiration evaporated rather quickly. Normally I am not a big fan of headwinds but today it felt good.

In couple of weeks we will be off to Wichita Falls for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred. As of now it looks like the temperature could be above 100 degrees for the ride for the first time in a couple of years.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 25.34
  • riding time 1:44:24
  • average pace 4:07 min/mile
  • average speed 14.6 mph
  • max speed 19.8 mph
  • average cadence 77.6 rpm
  • max cadence 104 rpm
  • climb 181 ft., descend 185 ft., max elevation 108 ft.
  • August miles 278.24
  • This week’s mileage 152.76
  • YTD miles 3386.71
