About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

August 12th Bike Ride – We’re Cooking But No Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/44295724 465 548]

Two days in a row riding. The threatened rain was a no-show and the heat stayed around but it was only 91 degrees during the evening ride. The heat index did make it to 100 but no more. Skies turned out to be partly cloudy and the wind was barely detectable at 6 mph from the south. The aired up tires continue to make the pedaling somewhat easier so I stepped up to one gear higher when I could. Since it is essentially flat as a pancake around here the major obstacle is the wind. This evening’s ride was a race to get the distance I was aiming for before the sunset. With no cloud cover the daylight lasted long enough. I am starting to be pressed for time to ride 24 – 25 miles and I will probably need to scale back a couple miles in a week or so. I may be able to compensate on the Saturday ride. No other riders again tonight.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 25.05
  • riding time 1:40:29
  • average pace 4:01 min/mile
  • average speed 15.0 mph
  • max speed 21.6 mph
  • average cadence 78.4 rpm
  • max cadence 104 rpm
  • climb 139 ft., descend 196 ft., max elevation 91 ft.
  • August miles 198.83
  • YTD miles 3307.3

Houston faces more high heat indexes
By DALE LEZON HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Sticky, steamy heat gripping the Houston region in recent days is forecast to continue today and much of the week.

But scattered thunderstorms could give coastal areas a brief break from the searing triple-digit heat and parched conditions Thursday when a storm system sloshes ashore near New Orleans, possibly helping to spread rain showers toward the Houston area.

The heat index will be at least 105 degrees for the next few days. …

A Spring Texas Hill Country Tour
Wildflowers, Wild Women and Jimmy
263 miles (423 km) over 5 days from May 8, 2010 to May 12, 2010

We just had to have a picture of the wild women in the wildflowers. As we had our bikes strewn across a driveway to take this pic, the owners were trying to leave. They probably thought we were crazy, but they smiled and waved like we were normal!

2 Times Triple Digits – August 11th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/44155495 465 548]

As I was riding this evening when I got to the Kwik Kar Auto Center at Pinehurst Trail and FM1960 their temperature sign was flashing 100 degrees. When I left home the heat index was at 104 degrees. To keep this triple digit theme going I also aired up my tires to 110 PSI before I left. The extra air pressure made a difference in the ride this evening although it could have been because I had not ridden since Monday. The wheels turned faster, or so it seemed. I will have to look at the ride statistics below to see if my perception matches reality. Overcast skies kept the sun hidden and the light 9 mph SSW breeze was not a factor either. Surprisingly the humidity was 43% and as I rode east over the FM1960 McKay Causeway I thought I felt a few rain sprinkles. Yard-wise I need some rain. We went from a wet July to a very dry August.

No other riders were out this evening.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 24.19
  • riding time 1:34:39
  • average pace 3:55 min/mile
  • average speed 15.3 mph
  • max speed 21.8 mph
  • average cadence 80.8 rpm
  • max cadence 109 rpm
  • climb 136 ft., descend 183 ft., max elevation 101 ft.
  • August miles 173.77
  • YTD miles 3282.24
