About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Heat is Up – August 8th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 8, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 8, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/43696095 465 548]

For the umpteenth day in a row the weatherman has warned of heat index temperatures in the 104 to 108 range. While I definitely noticed the heat during today’s ride it was not unbearable thanks to a mild 7 mph breeze and the occasional cloud hiding the sun. Scattered clouds provided some sun breaks. My goal for today was at least 26 miles to put me over the 100 mile mark for the week. I did not get to ride yesterday because I went to Word Camp Houston. I learned a bunch on how to improve the Texbiker.net website since it runs on WordPress. Some of the easier changes have already been made. I will be working on some others as time permits.

No riders out today and I did not see any runners either.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 26.44
  • riding time = 1:45:32
  • average pace = 3:59 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.0 mph
  • max speed = 21.3 mph
  • average cadence = 77.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 103 rpm
  • climb 150 ft., descend 158 ft., max elevation 108 ft.
  • miles for the week of 8/2 to 8/8/10 100.45
  • August miles 125.48
  • YTD miles 3233.95

The Song of The RainCrow: Seeing Cycles
by William RainCrow
Now for the bicycle part. I am hugely in favor of bicycle riding. Other than walking, there is no other form of transportation that I know of that is as energy efficient, healthy, or ecologically friendly as bicycling. … I still don’t live on city streets, and I’m not sure if I’d have the courage it takes to ride there, even with the wonderful new dedicated bike lanes. I live out in the country near McDade, Tx now, my bike is an old, but solid, Murray 18 speed mountain …

Mountain biking in Breckenridge: How does it compare to Austin?
by Austin 360
By Pam LeBlanc
We have a world-class mountain biking scene here in Central Texas.

The stair-stepped ledges of Emma Long Metropolitan Park, the rock- and root-studded single track through the Barton Creek greenbelt, and the up-and-down, whoop-de-do terrain of Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park chum up cyclists riding knobby-tired steeds like wriggly worms draw in bass.

So how does mountain biking in Austin, where the elevation is 621 feet at Camp Mabry, compare to mountain biking in the real mountains — the Rocky Mountains of Colorado? …
