About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup August 5th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2010

Geek is a State of Mind
from Improbable Insights» Loyd Case on Technology by Loyd Case

I’ve written boatloads of articles over the years about PC tech, building PCs, hardware specs, benchmarks and other topics that PC enthusiasts (read: PC geeks) care about. Geeks obsess over details. How many shader cores? What’s the latency? Bandwidth between interconnects. And so it goes.

I’m also a fairly serious amateur photographer. I obsess over which lenses would be ideal, how fast they should be, ISO settings, which noise reduction app works best. I suppose you could call me a digital photo geek, but I’m a pale shade of some of the real pros out there.

Then there’s bicycles.  …

JOURNEY’S END IN SIGHT – The University of Texas bicyclists posed for a photo Monday in Whitehorse.

Heat Warning Again – August 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2010 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/43314462 465 548]

Another day with heat index warnings. Yesterday there a couple of locations that had heat index of 110 degrees. There was a possibility of 107 degree heat index in the Houston area but with the cloud cover this may not have happened. During my evening bike ride I did not notice extreme heat but it was warm at 91 degrees when I left for the ride. The sky was overcast and the wind has picked up to 14 mph from the SSE, the normal for our area.

I did not spot any other riders so they must have been smart and stayed inside. The next two days I will not be riding so maybe by Sunday the heat will have moderated.

The broken tooth has a temporary cap on it so I am back in business and will not have to worry about eating.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 25.25
  • riding time =1:41:07
  • average pace = 4:00 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.0 mph
  • max speed = 21.6 mph
  • average cadence = 78.2 rpm
  • max cadence = 100 rpm
  • climb 175 ft., descend 230 ft., max elevation 92 ft.
  • August miles 99.04
  • YTD miles 3207.51
