About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Do you recall where you were in the spring of 2000? Perhaps not. Don’t feel badly; I have to confess that ordinarily I couldn’t tell you where I was last Friday, much less 10 years ago. But I had a conversation in April of the beginning of this decade that changed my life and the lives of so many others so drastically that I’m sure I will recall it distinctly 10 years from today.

July 15th Bike Ride – Drive Home Traffic Torture

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2010

Today was traffic purgatory both to work and coming home. TxDOT is repairing a section of US59 southbound during the morning drive time. This had traffic backed up for miles. So my drive to work was frustrating but fortunately I remembered a route I used many years ago and was able to drive around the blockage. The drive home was even worse. An 18-wheeler had some kind of accident on US59 north and traffic was at a total stop. My drive around route was not quite as successful as in the morning so I was delayed. This slowed the start of the evening ride by about 13 minutes. I was afraid I would not be able to go on my planned route but I made it. Tomorrow the traffic has to be better; the road repair has disappeared from the traffic map and the 18-wheeler has been cleared off.

Once I got home the 101 degree heat index and the 93 degree actual temperature were waiting. The humidity still seems to be mild though I was sweating a lot while I was riding. Blue skies continued with a 11 mph SE wind. Not bad weather for riding.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 24.65
  • riding time 1:37:17
  • average pace = 3:57 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.2 mph
  • max speed = 21.4 mph
  • average cadence = 79.9 rpm
  • max cadence = 108 rpm
  • climb 169 ft., descend 155 ft., max elevation 108 ft.
  • July miles 252.52
  • YTD miles 2819.18
