About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

July 14th Bike Ride – 103 Degree Heat Index and Blue Sky

Texbiker.net Posted on July 14, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 14, 2010

While the heat index was 103 the temperature was 94 when I left for my ride. Clear blue skies and a 9 mph southerly breeze made for a nice ride if you do not count the sweat running off my chin. The goal was to get my ride in and then watch stage 10 of the Tour de France that I recorded early in the day. Mission accomplished though it took until 11:30 PM to see the Radio Shack rider Sergio Paulinho win the stage in Gap. The scenery was beautiful though the stage was not contested by the peloton.

Here in my part of the world there was no contest since I was the only rider on the road that I saw.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 24.6
  • riding time = 1:37:15
  • average pace = 3:57 min/mile
  • average speed = 15.2 mph
  • max speed = 20.0 mph
  • average cadence = 79.4 rpm
  • max cadence = 102 rpm
  • climb 196 ft., descend 158 ft., max elevation 107 ft.
  • July miles 227.87
  • YTD miles 2794.52

Daily News Roundup July 13th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 13, 2010

No ride report today. I took a rest day to watch the 4 hours of stage 9 of the Tour de France. Great race with Alberto and Andy catching the breakaway with seconds remaining. The yellow jersey suffered a lot going up the final mountain. Being a flat lander the mountains would do me very quickly. I am inspired for tomorrow’s ride though.

The following article is not Texas based but I could not pass it up. My grandparents lived in Gratiot, Ohio, and I spent many a summer there when I was growing up. My Dad had a garden at their home for many years. Every Thursday we would drive to Gratiot from Zanesville (10 miles maybe) to tend the garden. A push cultivator was a tool I learned much about.

Veteran cyclists: Injured soldiers hope to inspire
BY ABBEY ROY • CentralOhio.com • July 13, 2010
GRATIOT — To all injured veterans struggling in a wheelchair, or feeling hopeless because of a lost limb, or grappling with the haunting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder: Seventeen men and women would like your attention.

They are riding their bicycles nearly 4,000 miles across the country to get it, and their message is this:

“We want others to see this and say, ‘We can do that,'” said Marc Esposito, 26, who nearly died in a bombing while serving in the Air Force in Afghanistan. …

Does Bicycling Need Rebranding?
by Triple Pundit
Despite the growth of exurbs and the long commutes that pair with them, bicycle riding has become more popular than ever before.  Los Angeles, where I live, is hardly a city thought to be full of bicycles, but its university campuses are teaming with bikes; immigrants and urban hipsters are two wheeling it from Echo Park to Larchmont; and a walk around the Silver Lake Reservoir on weekend mornings means bike riders will zip past you, possibly on their way to biking along the Los Angeles River. …
