About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pedal Pushers: Door Key Road
by Roy and Christine
Founded by John Willis Johnson. By 1902 Mr. Johnson had acquired over 90,000 acres of land in Tom Green County and surrounding counties. Mr. Johnson came to San Angelo in 1874 as a bufflalo hunter. In 1881 he bought some sheep, and from his profits in 1882, he went into the cattle business. The same year he was elected Sheriff of Tom Green County and had a reputation of being one of the few sheriffs who did not carry a gun. …

July 12th Bike Ride – Hot and Dry for a Change

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2010

After last week’s rain deluge this week is the exact opposite. With the wind out of the southwest at 12 mph (gusts to 17 mph) the humidity has dropped and the temperature has risen to the mid-90’s. This is my kind of weather. This reminds me of the weather when I go to Wichita Falls for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred.

This evening’s ride was a good start for the week. I took yesterday off as a rest day. Saturday was a longer ride and I moved furniture around Friday night. Then Saturday after the ride I planted a dozen Nandina’s in the yard to replace some other plants that did not survive the dry and heat. Then on Sunday I planted myself in front of the TV to watch stage 8 of the Tour de France. It was an exciting stage with Lance suffering some problems.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 24.4
  • riding time = 1:38:09
  • average pace = 4:01 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.9 mph
  • max speed = 21.4 mph
  • average cadence = 78.5 rpm
  • max cadence = 109 rpm
  • climb 177 ft., descend 180 ft., max elevation 108 ft.
  • July miles 203.27
  • YTD miles 2769.93

Defensive cycling class first for Texas
by Austin News
The number of cyclists is on the rise here in Austin and that’s bringing an increase in the number of traffic tickets for people on bicycles.

Those tickets can be expensive. Some carry fines that exceed 200 dollars.

But now, Austin cyclists can take a special…

Nine Titles Awarded on Day 3 of Junior Nationals | The Valley …
from www.thevelodrome.com
After inclement weather forced the morning session to be delayed until afternoon, day three of the USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships was a busy one. Nine national titles were awarded on the penultimate day as riders in the 17-18 age category continued to heat up the track, and the 10-12 and 13-14 groups completed their overall omniums.

The men’s team pursuit saw the Young Medalists squad of Juan Carmona (Breinigsville, Pa./Young Medalists), Robin Carpenter (Philadelphia, Pa.), Wesley Kline (Emmaus, Pa.) and Zack Noonan (Kutztown, Pa.) win the national title over the foursome of Nate Geoffrion (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift), Ryan Eastman (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift), Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Hot Tubes)…

Stephenville Firecracker 100 Bicycle Ride 2010
by Tracy www.sewthankfulblog.com
My first big ride post ACL/Knee surgery in March was the Stephenville, Texas Firecracker 100–a metric century which is 100 kilometers or 62 miles.

I am happy to report that despite continuous rain the day before and a 40 – 50% chance of thunderstorms the day of the ride that it was a go… and I did finish.  There was a race and a ride option offered.  I chose ‘ride only’ which is simply an endurance ride on a designated course on public roads. I have no desire at this point in my life to race. …

Rude bicyclists – Dallas – Texas (TX) – City-Data Forum
from www.city-data.com
I have noticed the increasing number of bicycling groups on the road and realize that probably the vast majority of them are nice and respect the road and their place on the road.

But one thing I’ve noticed as well, and it may just be coincidence, is that I am seeing aggressive and rude bikers more frequently. I understand the concept of “share the road”, but some of these people are complete…

Cyclists, cars need to share the road in Tyler – CBS 19 – The Eye …
from www.cbs19.tv
“I had one of our friendly East Texas people spit tobacco juice in my face,” George “Butch” Willingham, said who’s been cycling for nearly two decades. …
