About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mountain Biking–King Of Biking Sports In Texas
by admin
Any place where the terrain is rough and the sky is blue in Dallas, Houston or elsewhere in Texas is a place you’ll probably find mountain bikers. The sport of mountain biking usually refers to riding bicycles, which possess particular design characteristics, off-road, although sometimes the term simply refers to riding a mountain bike. …

Bartonville restricts cyclists and runners
by Examiner.com
Bartonville, Texas – Getting around the mextroplex of Dallas Ft. Worth is fairly easy if you go by car but, if by foot or bicycle — not so much. And it’s especially tough when inside the LBJ Freeway/I-20 loop because there are few dedicated bike lanes (OK, make that zero bike lanes) and limited walking paths outside parks and greenbelts. If you’re wanting to find a pedistrian-friendly stretch of road more than a 1/2 mile without a stop sign or light – forget about it, there just isn’t one. That’s why endurance bicyclists and runners alike seek the roads of less-urbanized towns outside the concrete jungle. …

Unboxing the Diadora Speedracer Carbon Shoes

Texbiker.net Posted on July 2, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 2, 2010

Today I received my order from Bike Nashbar. FedEx had said the scheduled delivery was July 6th so I had not been expecting these to arrive today. I would like to try these out tomorrow but right now the weather is not too promising with 60% chance of rain. On top of that our community 4th of July parade is scheduled for 10:00 AM rain or shine on Saturday. But I can go for ride after the parade if the rain is a no show.

I have tried to buy shoes at the local bike shops but the selection of sizes and brands have not been large enough.

Daily News Roundup July 1st – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2010

My favorite sports doctor has two sections in his weekly newsletter that have a bearing on bicyclists. As you will read it is almost impossible to eat 18,000 calories a day. For the RAAM riders this can be an issue.

Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine
July 3, 2010
18,000 Calories per Day in Race Across America
You need to take in large amounts of food when you exercise for more than a few hours, otherwise you will slow down and eventually have to stop.   In the Race Across America, four cyclists alternated shifts as a relay team and completed the race distance of 2800 miles in 6 days, 10 hours and 51 minutes.  Each rode about 10 hours per day in one hour shifts.  Even though they cycled only a quarter of the time and distance, they each burned an average 6,420 calories per day, compared to the average for North American men of a little over 2000 calories per day. …

Dear Dr. Mirkin: Will running or cycling long distances daily, year after year, damage your heart?

No!  A study of athletes who participated in extreme and uninterrupted endurance training for up to 17 years, in two to five Olympics, showed no evidence of heart damage (left ventricular weakening, cardiomyopathies)…

Cycling Notebook: Craddock’s performance one for ages

Houston’s Lawson Craddock went to the 2010 USA Cycling Junior Nationals this past weekend as the presumed best young cyclist in the country, then proceeded to prove he’s absolutely in a class by himself among the 18-and-under crowd.

The recent Cypress Springs High School graduate scored a hat trick in Bend, Ore., by thoroughly dominating the criterium, the time trial — his specialty, which he won by a remarkable 2-minute…

Great Bike People We’ve Met | The Path Less Pedaled
by Russ
It was wonderful to watch him ride a bike because you could see him instantly transformed into someone with effortless grace on two wheels. We also spoke a lot to Martina, who was determined to expand cycling to families. …. Bernie and Bryan, the owners of Trinity Bicycles, hosted our most amazing presentation to date in Fort Worth. We got a crowd of over 100 people and it was evidence that Fort Worth and North Texas had a large latent bike culture. …

Tour de Soft Serve

June 28: Little Texas to Sterling
Monday June 28, 2010, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 335 miles (539 km)
We had the predicted buckets o’ rain in the night and early morning and packed up wet flies; I was wearing the laundry I didn’t get a chance to do but that didn’t hurt as much as I’d expected. We thought that, rain or no, we could at least move to Fulton and find a place to stay indoors. As the sun came out on this steamy day, the occasional shower was a relief. I did need a bike shop — again. This time it wasn’t my fault (I hadn’t jammed the chain between gears). The sound of a…

Close Out June With Rain – Bike Activity for the Month

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2010

I was hoping to close out the month of June with a ride. Instead I was indoors watching the rain from Hurricane Alex as he dissipated over Mexico. Thursday is not much better with some strong rain bands coming into southeast Texas. So in my idle time I thought I would recap the month’s riding action.

I did no organized rides this month. There are plenty of rides out there but not close enough that I can get there when I drive from home on Saturday morning. There was my brief interruption going into the hospital. This probably kept me from exceeding the 600 mile mark for June. No major mechanical problems but I did suffer some on the road flats. Replacing my chain was a good idea even though I did not remove any links until the next day’s ride.

June bicycling statistics:

  • total miles = 525.91 (June 2009 miles = 630.89)
  • number of days riding = 16
  • average miles per ride = 32.86
  • longest ride = 62.13
  • total riding time = 35:43:05
  • average speed for the month = 14.7 mph
  • average pace for the month = 4:05 min/mile
  • average cadence for June = 78.3 rpm
  • total ascending for the month = 3,416 ft.

With no riding yesterday I took pictures of my bikes.
