About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tropical Storm Alex Plays in the Gulf of Mexico – June 29th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2010

This evening on the drive home I went through some heavy rain showers. Earlier today the weatherman was predicting the outer bands of tropical storm Alex could bring some rain. I was hoping this would not be in the areas I planned on riding to this evening. After taking yesterday off to recover from the weekend I was really wanting to ride and get closer to my June goal. I am already short of the goal due to my hospital visit. The skies were cloudy and the temperature was only in the mid-80’s but the wind had picked up from yesterday’s rather mild breeze. At times during the day I saw wind speed in the 20’s  but during this evening’s ride it was 13 mph max.

Alex will continue to mess with my riding plans for the next several days but I will work around him.

Nothing unusual about this evening’s ride; no other riders spotted, roads were not damp except for a few spots and I felt good pedaling. I continue to use my Diadora shoes over my Shimano RD075’s. My feet feel liberated. I checked the progress on my new shoes and FedEx says they will deliver them on July 6th.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 24.33
  • riding time = 1:38:57
  • average pace 4:04 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.8 mph
  • max speed = 19.6 mph
  • average cadence = 79.1 rpm
  • max cadence = 100 rpm
  • climb 172 ft., descend 178 ft., max elevation 100 ft.
  • June miles 525.91
  • YTD miles 2566.66

Faster Dad!
from Mike’s Bike Blog
Those were the words I heard coming from behind me yesterday as I took Jack out on Parmer for the first time. We drove out to the Parmer & 3405 intersection and parked. I picked this location to get out of traffic, plus with the wind coming from the South we could ride South towards Hwy 29 into the wind to start and have a tail wind on the way back.

The headwind made it a little rough, I kept telling him to stay as close to me as possible to draft off of me, but he would fall off the back every once in awhile. The place he really excels is on the hills, his light 70 lb. body is made for climbing. I have to keep an eye on him on the hills and counter his attacks…
