About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

My Diadora Shoes – June 27th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 27, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 27, 2010

For many months I have been riding with Shimano RD075 shoes. During this time I have not been that satisfied with how they have felt. Today for some reason I thought I would ride with my older Diadora shoes. I have always felt comfortable in these shoes but they are worn and need new Keo cleats. Today’s ride was much more comfortable with them and so when I got home I looked at Nashbar.com to see if they had any Diadora shoes on sale. Lo and behold they did. My first slection was not in the color I prefer (black) but I found another pair that was in lack. sometimes I am miffed at websites and how they word things. Nashbar said the inventory status was “low”. I am not sure exactly what this means; you either have the item in inventory or you don’t. So I will wait to see if my order ships. The Diadora shoes always had the best fit for feet; wide toe box, the size was correct, durable.

During today’s ride the heat index was 102 with the temperature at 95 degrees or 98 degrees on my weather station at home. Partly cloudy with a slight wind from the south. I did see one other biker; a man riding a recumbent bike with a faring windshield. This was unusual. Riding during the middle of the day drives home the heat. Perspiration continues to flow from my pores at a liberal pace.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 24.61
  • riding time = 1:42:15
  • average pace = 4:09 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.4 mph
  • max speed 20.5 mph
  • average cadence = 77.8 rpm
  • max cadence = 104 rpm
  • climb 241 ft., descend 226 ft., max elevation 108 ft. (thanks to an overpass over US59)
  • June miles 501.58
  • YTD miles 2542.32

Low Flying Crop Duster – June 26th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 26, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 26, 2010

Today’s ride included some roads I have not been on before as well as spotting a bi-plane crop duster doing his thing over some fields in east Harris County. In the video below you see a few seconds of the crop duster as he finishes and heads away to somewhere else. I saw plenty of other riders today. I am not sure of the number but 40 does not seem out of bounds. Just when I thought I was probably the stinkiest person around a skunk took the prize from me. I continue to wonder where all of the water comes from when I perspire. Just after I saw the crop duster fly off I stopped in some tree shade. As I was standing there listening to a herd of cows grunt to each other the perspiration was just dripping on everything. Later I stopped at a Chevron station in Huffman. When I got ready to leave there was a wet spot on the concrete as I stood up.

As you can see in the video the skies were partly cloudy while the temperature was in low 90’s as I headed home. The wind was from the south or southeast but less than 10 mph. Once I got home my wife and I are installing some new shelving in the garage. This turned out nicely; better than my attempt to install a new steering stabilizer on my Jeep Wrangler. As usual I needed a special tool (a pickle fork) to get a tapered bolt loose. My success is much better when I work on my bikes.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 50.85
  • riding time = 3:30:58
  • average pace = 4:09 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.5 mph
  • max speed = 21.5 mph
  • average cadence = 76.7 rpm
  • max cadence = 108 rpm
  • climb 260 ft., descend 263 ft., max elevation 120 ft.
  • June miles 476.96
  • YTD miles 2517.71
