About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Stopped in My Tracks – June 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 23, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 23, 2010

The plan for this evening’s ride was the long Huffman loop so that I can maximize the miles while the daylight hours are still plentiful enough. But I ran into a blockage when I turned onto Old Atascocita Road. A Union Pacific train had th railroad crossing blocked. Sometimes the crews stop in the area to eat dinner. Most of the time the trains are short enough that the crossing is not blocked but tonight was different. Waiting along with were two vehicles and two other bikers. The bikers were closer to the cross arms that marked the spot. I was thinking that they would wait for the train to start moving again but they must have grown impatient and decided to slide their bikes under the railcar that was blocking the road. This is very risky but they made it to the other side, thank goodness. I am not this brave or foolish. After five minutes I gave up and turned around and improvised another route.

Overcast skies, 87 degree temperature and a 12 mph SSE breeze were making this ride somewhat cooler than the last several.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 26.71
  • riding time = 1:49:53
  • average pace = 4:07 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.6 mph
  • max speed = 20.7 mph
  • average cadence = 77.1 rpm
  • max cadence = 99 rpm
  • climb 189 ft., descend 222 ft., max elevation 104 ft.
  • June miles 399.22
  • YTD miles 2439.97

Tour d’Italia Italy, Texas 2010
The Wheelbrothers enjoyed this weekend’s Tour d’Italia in Italy, Texas and appreciated the nice and cool temperatures in the high 90’s.

Texas 4000 Documentary Part 4: Rest Day In Albuquerque, New Mexico
In this installment of my Texas 4000 summer video, our team travels from Encino, New Mexico to Albuquerque, where we spent our first rest day after biking over 700 miles! It got a little tricky biking around the city, but with the help of a local cyclist who was our guide, we made it to Los Ranchos, a suburb of Albuquerque, where we stayed with the Abraham family, whose son Geoff was riding with the Rockies team at the time. Their hospitality and generosity was the best we had received to date! …

Most Daylight of the Year – June 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 21, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 21, 2010

Today is the first day of summer and the day with the most daylight of the year. According to the weather people summer officially arrived at 6:28 AM today when the sun was directly over the Tropic of Cancer. Moving forward each day will have about 2 minutes less daylight until we reach winter. I always have a slight problem with this shift because I ride in the evening after work during the week. I cherish the daylight. While this slow change begins I plan on getting as much riding in as possible though.

Being full summer now the temperature was 95 degrees with a 105 heat index when left home on my ride. Humidity was fairly low and the 12 mph southerly breeze felt good. With partly cloudy skies it was definitely hot, the way I like it. While I was driving home from work I went through a brief rain shower about 22 miles from home. It is strange to be in a downpour with the sun shining all round you.

Several riders passed me in the opposite direction on Old Atascocita Road where I usually see some. This is a popular route since traffic is low.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 27.2
  • riding time = 1:51:05
  • average pace = 4:05 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.7 mph
  • max speed = 20.1 mph
  • average cadence = 78.7 rpm
  • max cadence = 135 rpm
  • climb 205 ft., descend 270 ft., max elevation 103 ft.
  • June miles 372.52
  • YTD miles 2413.26

The following pictures are from the McKay Causeway over Lake Houston looking south. I think this water view reminds me of the seawall in Galveston. Click on the thumbnails for a larger view.
