About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

An Early Start to Beat The Heat – June 19th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 19, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJune 19, 2010

After last weekend’s indoor excursion to the hospital I wanted to get an early start on the ride today. I did make it out the door at 6:59 AM and the cooler temperature was greatly appreciated. With this early start I thought I might see some other riders but I did not see anyone until I was within 2 miles of home.

The ride got off to a good start until I ran over a rock on the US59 service road Caney Creek bridge just north of New Caney. I got a pinch flat so I pulled over to patch the hole. I have to admit my patching credentials are not what they should be since I have been known to miss the hole with the patch. This was not a problem today but while I was fixing the flat the perspiration was pouring from my brow, arms and about anywhere it could. Where does all of this liquid come from?

After the flat things went well. The skies were populated by the little puffy white clouds that have been around most of the week. Temperature was 78 degrees when I passed New Caney High School and was 94 degrees when I got home. Wind was not really a factor being around 9 mph or less from variable directions.

When I got home I decided it was time to perform several maintenance things: rotate tires, replace the Wipperman chain with a SRAM PC-1050 I have had for awhile. All went well until I tired to install the removable link in the chain. As much as I tired I could not get it to lock in place. I ended up reusing the Wipperman removable link.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles = 53.03
  • Riding time = 3:39:38
  • average pace = 4:08 min/mile
  • average speed = 14.5 mph
  • max speed = 21.6 mph
  • average cadence = 77 rpm
  • max cadence = 112 rpm
  • climb 218 ft., descend 222 ft., max elevation 141 ft.
  • June miles 322.85
  • YTD miles 2363.60

Today I brought my Flip camera along and recorded some places I rode through.

Tom began riding a bike when he was eight years old, on the sidewalks of Minneapolis. Within a few years, he made his way around the city as far as the sidewalks and bike paths would take him. Soon enough, he ventured into the streets and was further pushing the limits of how far his bike would take him.

His community activism and involvement began with attendance at a few meetings in his neighborhood, speaking for bicycling where few or no other voices were heard. These meetings were his impetus for advocating…

Steered wrong? Racers concerned about broken carbon steerer tubes
from VeloNews by Zack Vestal
A small but concentrated group of mid-Atlantic road racers have recently broken the carbon steerers on their 2010 Trek Madone 6-Series bikes. While the regional nature of the reports is probably a coincidence, there does appear to be a pattern indicating that incorrect stem installation — and even stem choice — could lead to catastrophic failure. And at least one racer whose fork broke mid-race is convinced that the 6-Series Madone steerers are prone to breakage even when all of Trek’s instructions are followed. …

Protein After, Not During, Exercise
from Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin by Dr. Gabe Mirkin
High-protein meals eaten immediately after hard exercise have been shown to help athletes recover faster, but the data that taking protein during exercise improves an athlete’s performance is extremely weak.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham, UK, showed that adding protein (19g/hour) to a sugared drink does not improve one-hour cycling time trial, maximum power; or post exercise isometric strength, muscle damage (CPK) or muscle soreness (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, June 2010). Protein also does not help athletes cycle faster…
