About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

El Paso EPR
What:  Endurance mountain bike ride in El Paso, TX combined with a bit of West Texas cowboy poker.
When:  November 13th, 2010 at 6:00 am
Where: Heinrich Park
Poker Rules:  This is a friendly adventure.  Each rider will draw a card to start the event.  There will be locations on course where you will choose an additional card for your hand.  You may only leave the card stashes with one more card than you arrived with.  You may trade out any cards you don’t want.  For example:  You start the race with a 3 of spades.  You are the first rider to the first stash and there are two queens in the stash.  You may leave your 3 of spades and take the two queens, leaving the station with one more card than you arrived with.  Depending on the number of participants, you may be drawing from different decks.  Be sure to only take cards from the deck you are playing.  First single speed finishers each get a Joker wild card.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for February 11th

Shake-Down Time In Amateur Land!
from Bicycle.net | by System6
It’s early in the year, but Texas weather is already so much hotter than, say, April in Chicago, or June in Minnesota (when winter officially ends there, by the way).  So shop rides are back in swing and I’m already getting thrashed or shelled — pick whichever verb you prefer.  Or schelacked.  Or pooped out the back.  Anyway, I’m running short of worthy descriptions, but you’re invited to offer any of your own favorites in the comment box below. …

Mountain Biking–King Of Biking Sports In Texas
by Motorsports Accessories
The bicycle has really been no stranger to off-roading since its invention toward the end of 1800’s. The modern sport of mountain biking originated in the 1970’s with several groups of riders in Texas and other areas of the U.S. making …

Bike Out Hunger « We Are Texas Baptists
by rand
Coming up April 19-24, several of your fellow Texas Baptists (pastors and laypeople) are embarking on a 3-hour tour…well, actually a 6-day, 450-mile bicycle ride to raise money and awareness for fighting hunger. …

McKinney Velo Club: ‘Jim Hoyt for President”…
by Doc
That is the lead post in a growing thread on the TxBRA general discussion forum praising Jim’s efforts in support of Patrick McCarty. Jim, Max Miley and the RBM/Elite team have stepped in to give Pat a racing home as a bridge to a new pro team contract after Pat’s deal with Rock Racing fell through. Pat’s RR contract was voided when RR couldn’t obtain UCI approval for a Pro Continental license in 2010. Rock was only a Continental team in ’09, but 1/2 of the roster of Continental teams must be under age 28, and Pat hit 28 in 2010. …

Get involved in the cycling community
By Jason Whaley | Wednesday, February 10, 2010, 11:21 PM
There are some great opportunities on the horizon for cyclists to get more involved in their community. Some of these events and openings will afford those who choose to take advantage a way to help make a huge difference. Here is information from the Yellow Bike Project on how to get involved. …

Don’t Call it a Conference! A small team of folks from the League of Bicycling Voters, Austin Cycling Association, YBP, and elsewhere are teaming up to organize a two-day gathering to assess the current state of Austin’s bike community…

When Will the Rain and Cold End? Another Windtrainer Session

Texbiker.net Posted on February 11, 2010 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 11, 2010

Southeast Texas, and most of the state, is experiencing the opposite weather from last year. According to a weather blogger for the Houston Chronicle February 2009 had 75% of the days with a temperature above 70 degrees. Today marks the 11th day that we have not reached 70 degrees. My outdoor riding shows it. I was hoping to go to Harlingen this weekend for the Jalapeno 100 but a death in the family has taken precedence. So while they probably enjoy that elusive 70 degree weather I will be here wimping out in the coolness.

Tonight’s windtrainer session numbers: miles=11.22, max speed=21.1, avg. speed=15.0, avg. cadence=82 rpm, total time=44:48:22. The charts:

Speed - Distance Windtrainer 2-11-2010

Cadence - Distance Windtrainer 2-11-2010
