About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Through the Forest and the Hills – Coldsprings, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on December 19, 2009 by Rick AnkrumDecember 19, 2009

Saturday, January 30, 2010 local time
San Jacinto County Court House
1 State Highway 150   Coldspring, TX
Saturday morning on January 30th 2009, our annual “Bike through the Forest and the Hills” will once again put you to the Test.

Previous Riders and Ride Marshall’s have commented that this is one of the most challenging MS Recommended Bike Rides you will find for training for the BP MS150 in southeast Texas.

Our ride begins in the small town of Coldspring, Texas located just northeast of Houston off Highway 59. The ride route immediately puts riders into demanding hills that you don’t find in other bike rides … hence the title “Bike through the Forest and the Hills”.

The ride then levels out onto clean and open scenic roads into “The Forest”. On your return dash to the finish, you are once again met head-on with those challenging hills.

We offer 4 ride routes for all levels of riders. The 48 mile route has been described as “one challenging ride”.   All information on the ride can be found on our website.

We have full rest stops and SAG support. This will include all the fruit and drinks along with plenty of port-a-potties. So whether you need to take a break, need help with a flat or just need a lift, we will be there for you.

Ride of Silence – Texas

Texbiker.net Posted on December 19, 2009 by Rick AnkrumDecember 19, 2009

Ride of Silence

TIME: 7:00 pm
WHERE: Hundreds of locations world wide
Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
WHY DOES THIS ORGANIZATION EXIST?

* To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
* To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
* To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET

On May 20, 2009, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here…)

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

Please check the resources on this site. If there is a Ride Of Silence in your area, we encourage you to join them. If there is not a ride planned in your area, please consider adding your city to the ever-growing list of sites. To get information on how to organize and host a Ride of Silence, please click HERE.

Tour Dallas – Dallas, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on December 19, 2009 by Rick AnkrumDecember 19, 2009

Tour Dallas

START at Dallas City Hall
* Routes of 8, 20 and 30 miles
* Start Time: 8:00am
Who’s first? Who cares! This is a TOUR – not a race. No need to get in a hurry and raise the stress levels or miss out on the fun along the way. Plus, with the number of cyclists in our event and the hazards of the roadway, going too fast can cause injury to you and others around you. So relax and enjoy the ride. Then when you get to the Finish Line Celebration, enjoy the fresh, hot pizza from Pizza Patron, a cold bottle of Dasani water and enjoy the day.
We offer a short 8 mile route in and around downtown Dallas for families and new cyclists who want to get an easy ride with a lot of fun. Our 20 mile route includes the Swiss Avenue Historic District, Lakewood and more, while the 30 mile route includes all that PLUS a lap around White Rock Lake. All routes will be staged in front of City Hall, rolling out at 8:00AM.
